MONTENEGRO Resolution tabled by the Movement for Changes PZO of Montenegro at the IDU Executive Meeting on 6th December 2019 in Washington DC, USA The IDU expresses its concern about the continuous politically motivated institutional persecution of Nebojsa Medojevic, leader of the Movement for Changes (PzP). The political persecution of PzP -as a party which strongly promotes traditional Christian values and the ideology of a modern conservatism- is a continuation of the totalitarian ruling practice of Milo Djukanovic’s DPS, the only communist party in Europe which has continuously been in power since 1945. The IDU calls upon EU institutions to strongly condemn the practice of Stalinist show trials, as well as the lack of efficient investigations in regard to the smuggling of drugs, cigarettes, arms and money laundering, and to insist on the effective protection of whistleblowers, MPs and journalists who investigate corruption and organized crime. The IDU carefully follows the situation in Montenegro -a candidate for EU membership- and expresses its concern because of the politically motivated persecution of Nebojsa Medojevic who enjoys the undivided support of our association as one of the most prominent and most courageous fighters against corruption and the mafia in Montenegro. His unconstitutional arrest -without a removal of immunity- in December 2018, following his speech before the Parliament, must be an alarm and a warning to the authorities in Montenegro that such practice inevitably leads to a redefinition of the European institutions’ stance regarding the progress made under Chapters 23 and 24. The rule of law, free expression of political opinions, strong parliamentary control – these are all the fundamental principles of the IDU, and the current situation in Montenegro with the persecution of one of the prominent opposition leaders, Nebojsa Medojevic, clearly indicates that Montenegro does not meet the basic criteria of Chapters 23 and 24. The IDU calls upon all political structures and institutions in Montenegro to open a dialogue about the fundamental reforms necessary for the consolidation of democracy and a peaceful solution to the deep political crisis in the country.
