2019 Summary for Round Green These series of reports provide a summary of the latest available information on the demographic and socio-economic make-up of the nineteen wards in Luton. It looks at the population structure and provides information on the economic, housing and educational achievement of each ward. What’s new – April 2019: Perceptions survey update (i) Round Green’s view of Luton: 24 per cent feel the image of Luton has improved over the last year 44 per cent feel positive about the future of this town Residents top rated aspects: 1. Health services (57%) 2. Sports and leisure facilities (52 %) 3. Schools (51%) November 2018: Housing there are 74,293 households in Luton of which 4,462 (six per cent) are in Round Green over half (57.8 per cent) of household space for Round Green is semi-detached properties followed by 18.1 per cent terraced (ii) the most common tenure in Round Green is households owned with a mortgage with 39.4 per cent followed by properties owned outright with 27.2 per cent (iii) Round Green has a higher than average level of social rented households with 13.2 per cent; the lowest is in Barnfield with 1.5 per cent and highest in Northwell with 33.8 per cent (iv) the average three bedroom house in Round Green in October 2018, cost £281,000, comparable to Luton’s average (v) Round Green had 8.9 per cent overcrowding, compared to Luton’s average of 15.4 per cent (vi) August 2018: Health Round Green had a lower than average level of low birth weights over a five year period with 7.8 per cent, Luton’s average was 9.1 per cent (vii) in the 2011 census, the percentage of people who self-reported bad or very bad health in Round Green was 4.2 per cent (as a percentage of the total number of people who responded to this question) (viii) obesity levels in Round Green for both children and adults were around the same as the average in Luton (ix) the average life expectancy in Luton for females is 82.4 and male 78.5; Round Green was higher with 83.6 and 79.3 respectively (x) the highest number of deaths recorded in Round Green was cancer, followed closely by circulatory disease (xi) April 2018: Demographics (xii) Round Green ward is located in South East of the town the population, based on mid-year estimate 2016 is just over 12,200, accounting for 5.7 per cent of Luton’s population Round Green has a higher proportion of residents aged over 45 in comparison to the rest of Luton accounting for 36.8 per cent 3 of 26 Round Green ward profile v4.0 – April 2019 Population (xiii) the white (British, Scottish, N. Irish, Welsh) population of Round Green consists of 61.7 per cent, compared to 44.6 per cent in Luton the highest proportion in the ethnic minority category is White Irish / Other and the highest concentration of Arab (albeit only 1.2 per cent) live in Round Green Deprivation (xiv) the 2015 indices of multiple deprivation showed that majority of Round Green is in the top 20 to 50 per cent most deprived nationally the percentage of children living in poverty after housing costs was 30 to 35 per cent Economic activity Round Green has a slightly higher than average economically active individuals than that of Luton with 79.5 per cent compared to Luton’s 74.3% (xv) it has a higher rate of median professions such as administrative, skilled trades and personal services - accounting for almost half of the occupation levels in Round Green in January 2018, there were 135 benefit claimants in Round Green, equating to a rate of 1.7 per cent; the average rate for Luton is 1.8 per cent (xvi) Crime (xvii) during 2016 and 2017, Round Green had a median number of burglaries with 95 incidents there were 18 incidents hate crime and 317 ASB reports fly tipping wasn’t as high as other wards with 175 incidents reported Perceptions of Luton (xviii) From wave 2 of the perceptions survey, it was identified that: 73 per cent of Round Green’s population were satisfied with Luton as a place to live only around a third felt Luton’s image had improved in the past 12 months 85 per cent of the residents agreed that their local area was a place where different backgrounds got on well together only 28 per cent of respondents felt they could influence decisions affecting their local
