Page 34 4 Title of book: The Egyptian Cinderella Author’s name: Shirley Climo Copyright year: 1989 Genre: Multi‐Cultural Number of pages: 28 Grade Intended: 4th SYNOPSIS OF STORY: Based on true events, a Grecian girl named Rhodopis is captured by the Egyptians and made into a slave. Because she looks different than the Egyptian servants, they constantly ridicule her and put her to work. One day the master catches Rhodopis dancing for her animal friends, and thought she was so nimble that she deserved a reward. He had special slippers made for her, which angered the servants further giving Rhodophis more work to do. While washing the linen Rhodophi’s dainty slipper gets swept up by a hawk and taken to Pharaoh Amasis. Amasis sees this slipper as a sign, and goes on a search to find the owner of the shoe. After extensive searching, Amasis finds that Rhodopis is the true owner, and Rhodophis is then asked to be the new queen of Egypt. ACTIVITY: Origination of idea: Original ideas mixed with ideas from Ms. Randa’s fourth grade class. Description of activity: Have the students create their own original Cinderella book. First have them brainstorm themes they can bring to the original Cinderella story to make it into their own. This can be anything from writing Cinderella as if she is in another culture such as in The Egyptian Cinderella or a different location such as a Cinderella that lives on the beach or in outer space, or even perhaps a different occupation such as Cinderella as a chef. After brainstorming and going through the prewriting stage, have students create a first draft of their story. Then have the students share their story with a partner and do some revising. Have the student then meet with the teacher individually to proofread the story and go over any mistakes. Finally, have the student create a final draft of the story to be published. Along with publishing the story, have students draw illustrations to go along with it. After all students books are published have them take turns reading their creation to the class in the author’s chair. 5 Title of book: When Africa was Home Author's name: Karen Lynn Williams Copyright year: 1991 Genre: Multi‐Cultural Number of Pages: 29 Grade Intended: 3rd SYNOPSIS OF STORY: Peter is a small boy who has lived in Africa since he was a baby and loves everything about it even though he looks different then everyone else. He has several fun experiences there such as sliding down anthills, climbing mango trees, going around barefoot, and more. Peter even has a good friend named Yekha that he plays with, eats with, and talks with. His father's work in Africa soon comes to an end and Peter's parents tell him he will have to return to America where they originally lived. Peter is worried about going to America and leaving everything he knows and loves. Eventually, Peter and his family make it back to America and Peter has a culture shock because everything is different in America including the way people talk and the cold winter weather. Peter greatly misses his friends in Africa, and is thrilled when his father finds another job back "home." Peter is soon reunited with Yekha and other friends and is so happy to finally be back in Africa. ACTIVITY: Origin of Idea: Original Description of Activity: For this activity, have the students create a poster showing traditions and items that represent their families' lifestyle and culture. In the book Peter sees Africa as his home, and only knows that way of living including activities such as running with the goats and other things they do there. Also, his friends and nanny are from there. His parents, however, see America as their home, and know those cultures and traditions including eating foods like pizza, and going out in the icy cold snow. For this activity, the students are to represent their lifestyle through a poster. They can use magazine pictures, drawings, and photographs, and words/labels to do this. They can do things such as putting pictures of their family, drawing traditional foods their family eats, showing games they play with friends and family, representing their heritage, and anything else that comes to their minds. 6 Title of Book: This Next New Year Author's name: Janet S. Wong Copyright year: 2000 Genre: Multi‐cultural Number of pages: 28 Grade Intended: Kindergarten SYNOPSIS OF STORY: One little boy is getting ready for his celebration of the Chinese or Lunar New Year. He goes through the story telling of the traditions he and his family celebrate. He also tells the different traditions his friends celebrate. He does everything from clean the house very well, to put on nice clean clothes. He does all this in order to take advantage of a fresh start and bring in good luck for the New Year. ACTIVITY: Origin of Idea: http://www.show.me.uk/site/news/STO971.html Description of Activity: Have the students create a traditional Chinese dragon puppet and then have a Chinese new year's parade. Dragon puppets are part of celebrating the Chinese New Year. First gather the supplies needed including A piece of red card and a piece of gold card (both about A4 sized), scissors, glue, sticky tape, two drinking straws (not the bendy ones) or garden sticks or disposable, chopsticks, pencil, crayons and glitter glue for decoration. Then take the students through the steps in order for them to create their puppet, look at the website for step by step instructions. After the students have created their craft, have them go through a few school classrooms (with the permission of the teacher) and down the halls to simulate a real Chinese New Year parade. 7 Title of Book: How Many Stars in the Sky? Author: Lenny Hort Copyright year: 1991 Genre: Multi‐cultural Number of Pages: 29 Intended grade: 5th SYNOPSIS OF STORY: One night a little boy's mama is gone and he can't sleep. He decides to count all the stars in the sky to relax. He starts by looking out his window, but the more he sees the more he journeys into the night to count them. The boy finds out his father can't sleep either, so together they hop into the truck. They decide to go on a journey in order to answer the question "How many stars in the sky?" ACTIVITY: Origin of Idea: Original For this activity the students will each get to pick a constellation to research and report on. In How Many Stars in the Sky, the boy pointed out the Big Dipper to his father. The student is to find information on a different constellation including what month can it best be seen, where is it in the sky at that time, the story or legend that goes along with the constellation, a picture or drawing of the constellation and other fun facts about the constellation. 8 Title of Book: The First Strawberries Author: Retold by Joseph Bruchac Copyright year: 1993 Genre: Multi‐Cultural Number of Pages: 29 Intended grade: 3rd SYNOPSIS OF STORY: In this Cherokee creation tale, man and woman are first created to keep each other company. The man and woman have a fight. The woman decides to walk away and the man cannot catch up with her. The sun sees the man's distress and decides to help him by shining light onto the fruit beside the woman's path. The sun shines on some strawberries; the woman tastes them and is reminded of her husband so she decides to pick them for him. The husband than catches up with his wife and they share the sweet strawberries. Cherokees still today are reminded that friendship is as sweet as the strawberry. ACTIVITY: Origin of Idea: Mrs. Maple's fourth grade class The students will make a diorama representing a Native American tribe's living area. In the book The First Strawberries a tale is represented from the Cherokee people. For this assignment the children are to pick any Native American tribe and recreate a typical living space that tribe might have.
