Hello, Goodbye Answer: VILLAGE by Jay Lorch • Step 1: Realize that this puzzle is about repeating patterns in songs where two words in the pattern vary. For instance, The Beatles’ song “Hello, Goodbye” has the pattern, “You say ①, I say ② ② ②”, once with replacement words STOP and GO and later with GOODBYE and HELLO. • Step 2: For each pattern on the bottom of the page, find a song where that pattern is repeated twice, and where the first three replacement words appear in the table at the top. Fill those words in the blanks to the right of the pattern and cross them off from the table since each is used exactly once. Then, determine the fourth replacement word and put it in the fourth blank. See below for the patterns, songs, and words. • Step 3: For each new word you put in the fourth blanks, index into it with the number given in brackets. Read the resulting letters to get MIGHTYJUNGLEPEACEFUL. • Step 4: Insert spaces and punctuation into that extracted message to get a new list of three replacement words: MIGHTY, JUNGLE, PEACEFUL.
