Blackman Road, West Bay Phone: 345-949-6797 St. Ignatius July 27, 2008—Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time & Christ the Redeemer Parish Priest From the Paulpit Rev. Paul Ballien This is the last of the World Youth Day reports. Although this was written in Australia, by the time you read Associate Priest this, I will be safe and sound back in Cayman, God willing. Rev. Alexander Crasta On Friday the 18th, the Bishop from Fargo, North Dakota (I'm sorry I wasn't able to catch his name) gave a very powerful talk at our catechetical session. He talked about how we should strive for sainthood. He also talked Deacon about how we should not take a cafeteria approach to our faith, but instead we need to accept the entire body of the Rev. Mr. Joseph Biggs Church's teachings. One of the examples he brought up was abortion, which he took a forceful stance against. A couple of pointed questions he asked in this regard was this: At what specific moment did your life begin? And the Music Directors second question is: What gives your life more dignity today than when you were in the womb? His point on this St Ignatius: second question is that it is only God who can bestow dignity on the human person, it doesn't originate from us. Mr. Simon Donoghue The next day we made our pilgrim walk to Randwick where the Papal World Youth Day Mass was to be held on Sunday. It was a very manageable 4.5 kilometer walk from where we began. By the time we reached the site, it Christ the Redeemer: was about 3:30 in the afternoon, and so we found a spot where we could set up our sleeping bags and mats for the Mr. Albert Chin night. Without a doubt, it was crowded. There were nearly a half a million pilgrims there. In our area, we were surrounded by people from Italy and Mexico. All evening long there were Christian rock bands playing and people Religious Education dancing and singing. It was noisy, lively and exciting. I spent some time wandering around trying to see how close Director I could get to the stage, and in the process I met up with a number of people I knew. I got fairly close to the stage Mr. O’Neil Miller too, but it took a long time to get there and back to our section because we were a good distance from the stage, and there were a lot of people to maneuver around. Church Secretary I also spent some time that evening in the Adoration tent where they had the Eucharist exposed. It was a little Mrs. May U. Ursua more quiet there, and warm, which was important because it had dropped into the 40s once night fell. Thank good- ness our sleeping bags were warm. It was a trick though trying to fall asleep because many people were still up Youth Minister singing and dancing past midnight. Even during the night, some of us in our group had the unpleasant experience Mr. Jeremy Rice of being inadvertantly stepped on as people would be wandering past us at all hours in order to get to the toilets. What can I say? It was an experience. Year 7-13 Principal The next morning, everyone began waking up with sun around 7:00am. We had morning prayer and then Mr. Peter Embleton Mass with Pope Benedict XVI. This is now my third World Youth Day, and with each one I experience, Phone: 949-9250 I appreciate it more and more. Fax: 949-5497 The Pope in his homily talked about Pentecost (The theme of this World Youth Day was: "Receive the Power of the Holy Spirit."), and how those gathered here are in a "new Upper Room" where the Holy Spirit comes upon us to inspire us to go out and witness to the rest of the world. The power of the Holy Spirit is a gift that we must Year KG-6 Principal use to break through our indifference and conformity to this age. He then asked us, what will you leave to the next Mrs. Jennifer Paul-O’Donnell generation? What legacy will you leave? Will we live in the Spirit or conform to the errors of our day? He then Phone: 949-9250 told us that a new generation of Christians is being raised up and called to respect life. We are being called to help Fax: 945-6230 build a world in which God's gift of life was welcomed and love was not greedy or self-seeking, but pure, faithful and genuinely free. Vice Principal He then spoke of a new age in which hope liberates us from the shallowness, apathy and self-absorption which Mr. Frank Braccia deadens our souls and poisons our relationships. Interior emptiness and despair is present in this world in a Phone: 949-9250 desperate search for meaning. We need the Holy Spirit to help us find fulfillment through love. The Pope then also Fax: 945-6230 said that our Church is in need of this renewal, and to not be afraid to use our talents to serve others. Without a doubt, this homily was a lot of food for thought, so don't be surprised if I elaborate on it in future St. Ignatius School homilies to come. Administrative Staff The last three days in Sydney were spent touring the city. A number of people in our group really liked the Mrs. Deborah Huggins koalas in the wild life exhibit. I am sure many of you will hear more about the experiences of our youth in the days Mrs. Anita McIntyre and weeks to come.
