Working together with local non-profits and community members, you’ll build sustainable solutions to the educational, social and economic challenges they face. Then take time to rejuvenate with relaxation of beachside yoga and adventures ranging from snorkeling to whitewater rafting. EVERYTHING YOU GET: Sustainable Service: 10 estimated service hours Full-time Tour Director Sightseeing: 1 sightseeing tours led by expert, licensed local guide Activity level: Active; moderate walking (about 2 hours daily), and may include high-altitude hiking, rafting, swimming, or more strenuous activities in high heat and humidity. The oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and the first seat of the Spanish colonial empire in the New World, the city’s rich historic and cultural heritage greets you in an eclectic mix of Victorian houses, palm tree-lined boulevards, ultra-modern shopping centers, and traditional eateries. DAY 2: SANTO DOMINGO | JARABACOA – Dive into island life with an expertly guided sightseeing tour of the city. – Visit Alcázar de Colón, a palace built by Christopher Columbus’s son in the early 1500s. – Visit Tres Ojos Cave, a series of caves dotted with freshwater lagoons located in the eastern tip of Parque Mirador del Este. – Travel to Jarabacoa. Participate in a wellness session. DAY 3: JARABACOA – Visit the Escuela Ambiamental, Jarabacoa’s Environmental School, where you’ll learn about reforestation efforts within the Dominican Republic. Channel your inner chef and learn how to transform local ingredients in to authentic Dominican dishes. – Experience a waterfall hike. – Enjoy a whitewater rafting excursion. DAY 4: SANTIAGO – Travel to Santiago, the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic and a tropical hotspot for Caribbean textile industries. – Practice Jiu-jitsu with local students. – Get a taste of the spirit of Carnival with an expert costume artist. – Explore the art of local handcrafts during a pottery-making workshop. – Take in the colors of Santiago during a street art walking tour. The Mariposa DR Foundation for Girls disrupts the cycle of gender inequality by helping Dominican and Haitian women create new opportunities through access to education and healthcare. The foundation provides girls with a safe place where they can create friendships and learn from one another, while also gaining Northern Coast Region (3) academic and life skills. Santiago (2) – Spend your evening reflecting with fellow travelers while learning Jarabacoa (2) local dance and enjoying beachside yoga. Santo Domingo (1) DAY 7: NORTHERN COASTAL REGION – Fly through the Dominican rainforest during a zip-line experience. – Enjoy time on the beach or participate in a surf lesson.
