Barbirolli Guidance

4th Isle of Man, British Isles 01 – 08 April 2017 Founded 2005 In Association with Supported by The Isle of Man Arts Council, Hugh and Sandra Davidson and Jim Mellon Barbirolli International Oboe Festival and Competition Isle of Man The Barbirolli International Oboe Festival and Competition is one the most prestigious oboe events in the world and is named after the English oboist Evelyn Rothwell (Lady Barbirolli), wife of the distinguished conductor Sir John Barbirolli. The competition has been held in the Isle of Man since 2005 when it transferred from the Isle of Wight. Over the years, the Festival and Competition have done much to promote young oboists and to encourage new music for the instrument through its commissioned works. Like its counterpart, the Tertis International Viola Competition, the oboe competition is promoted within a festival that offers recitals by distinguished oboists, masterclasses and seminars. The Festival and Competition are open to players of all nationalities. Oboists come from all over the world to participate and many have given very favourable feedback on the quality of the event as a whole. There are three main prizes and numerous subsidiary awards with the winner of the competition being engaged to appear at a major London venue in the UK. The Isle of Man is a unique place to visit for the Festival and Competition. It is not a part of the United Kingdom but a Crown Dependency situated 40 miles off the North West coast of England. The island is only 227 square miles in area and boasts some outstanding scenery with miles of unspoiled cliffs, bays, mountains and fields. Port Erin in the south-west of the island is a picturesque village with a remarkable Arts Centre that has for four decades promoted some of the best stars in music, theatre and the arts as well as being home to the renowned double bass, viola and oboe competitions. We hope our programme for Barbirolli 2017 will provide a stimulus for an exceptional Festival and Competition and we hope to see you in Port Erin between 1 and 8 April 2017. 2 President/Artistic Advisor: Jury: Secretariat: Professor George Caird Neil Black- UK Erin Arts Centre, Victoria Square, George Caird - UK (Chairman) Port Erin, Isle of Man IM9 6LD, Elaine Douvas - USA via UK. The Isle of Wight International Oboe Competition established itself as a competition of high international standard, attracting the world’s best aspiring oboists as competitors and some of the world’s finest oboe players as judges through the guidance and inspiration of its Founder Artistic Director, Lady Barbirolli. The view of the Council of Management was that the competition had great potential to develop in the future. It was proposed that it become a Festival and Competition, inviting all competitors in person, plus non- competing oboists alike, to partake in workshops and masterclasses during the festival. It would thus greatly widen its benefit to young people and become an educational and inspirational forum for young oboists. Such a development for the competition goes beyond the capabilities of the small loyal band of part time supporters of the Isle of Wight event requiring a continuous infrastructure of both professional support and local commitment. And so it was the unanimous view of the Council of Management of the Isle of Wight International Oboe Competition that this vision for the future of the Competition, and the maintenance of its artistic standards, could only be attained by moving the Competition to the Isle of Man. Here, in 2005, it came under the umbrella of the Erin Arts Centre which has promoted the triennial Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and Workshop in Port Erin since 1980 and the Mananan Festivals (of which the late Lady Barbirolli was its Patron until her death in 2008) since 1975 under their founder/director John Bethell MBE. The competition was moved to the Isle of Man with the blessing and encouragement of Lady Barbirolli and its recently retired chairman the late Michael Neubert. The aims of the competition, which will be held every three years, are to discover and encourage outstanding talent, to enable artists to gather experience in competing with other musicians and to provide an opportunity for performing particular repertoire including a new work at each competition. 5 In this competition the members of the jury are asked to assess each competitor on the basis of musicality, style, technique and presentation and the final judgement will be made on what is heard as the performances proceed during the week. The competition is exclusively for oboists and is open to musicians of all nationalities not more than 30 years of age on 1st April 2017. We hope our programme will provide a stimulus to everyone and will include performances of a high standard. 2017 PROGRAMME (Timetable subject to alteration) Friday 31st March 10.00 to 17.00 Registration Wednesday 05 April Saturday 08 April Special Hand frank on your mail posted 11.00 “The Oboe on record”.
