Whether you are one of our generous business or parent spon- sors or donors, worked behind the scenes, or came to enjoy the camaraderie and to purchase that “can’t live without” item, our students, faculty, and staff are grateful to you for your generous support. Proceeds from the Auction enable us to recruit and retain the finest faculty in the region, to provide incomparable curricular and extracurricular offerings, and to strengthen our financial aid budget. I salute this year’s Auction Chairs, Leah Frink and Julie Sloat, for their enthusiastic, expert engineering of this spectacular event. Their cheerful energy and positive spirit made the myriad organizational details leading to tonight’s event appear stress-free—although we know there had to be moments of angst! In addition, I know that the Auction Chairs and all of us here tonight applaud the talented Kari Miner for transporting us for a few hours to a warm tropical island for an evening in old Havana. Tonight, just prior to the Live Auction bidding, we pause for a moment to recognize our commit- ment to the Breakthrough Sacramento program, supported by the Country Day community since the program began on the SCDS campus in 1993. This year’s “Fund-a-Need for Breakthrough” was first introduced at the 2009 Auction as the “Last Cavalier Standing” and is a significant boost to Breakthrough Sacramento’s budget. Thank you for raising your bid card to pledge your support for Breakthrough to provide an education for these deserving children who attend under-resourced public schools. I raise my mojito to all of you who have unselfishly contributed your time, talent, and resources to make this event possible. The leadership of our Chairs—along with the generosity of our sponsors, donors, volunteers, enthusiastic bidders, and attendees—ensures an evening of fun and fundraising. Enjoy your trip to Havana! STUDENTS MAKING BREAKTHROUGHS. Support the year-round, tuition-free college preparatory program and make an investment in the larger Sacramento region and beyond. In 1993, SCDS joined an international collaboration dedicated to providing college preparation for motivated middle and high school students from under-resourced public schools. In addition, BSAC serves as an innovative teacher-training program for talented high school and college students. This “students teaching students” model results in a life-changing experience for individuals, families, and communities. FUND-A-NEED FOR BREAKTHROUGH Through your generosity, you can help provide necessities for the year-round Breakthrough Program, with summer classes held on the SCDS campus. Proceeds from the game will augment the very basic needs of the program, including classroom supplies (books & materials), healthy snacks for the students, significant transportation expenses to transport students to and from their local neighborhoods to SCDS, field trips to college campuses, and teacher intern stipends.
