Decorations Choose reusable decorations. ______________________________________ Check to see if equipment and/or supplies can be borrowed, donated, and/or rented before purchasing anything new. _______________________________________________________________ Avoid using balloons _______________________________________________________________ Supporting local florists and purchase seasonally available flowers. Local nurseries may donate or loan plants. _______________________________________________________________ Get crafty and make decorations out of old magazine photos or other “waste” items. Have a decoration crafting party with your event volunteers. Use reusable dishes and silverware. Food and _________________________________________ Beverage Serve in bulk. _________________________________________ Encourage attendees to bring own cup or reusable bottle. _______________________________________________________________ Serve finger foods that require no dishes or utensils. _______________________________________________________________ Compostable dishware is the next best alternative to reusable, but only if proper composting service is available. _______________________________________________________________ Avoid individually packaged items like condiment, dressing, and sugar packets. _______________________________________________________________ Replace plastic stir straws with wooden compostable sticks or washable metal spoons. Serve fair trade, organic coffee and tea. Food and _____________________________________________ Beverage Provide as much seasonal, local, organic food as possible. _______________________________________________________________ Avoid disposable plastic water bottles instead Provide water stations for refilling cups and reusable bottles. _______________________________________________________________ Include a vegetarian option. Consider reducing the amount of meat served overall. When serving seafood, consult Seafood Watch’s Recommendations Guide . _______________________________________________________________ Choose meat, poultry, and fish that is United States Department of Agriculture certified organic. _______________________________________________________________ Plan food quantities carefully to avoid having excess food. Arrange to donate any leftover food. Plan ahead for waste collection. Waste ______________________________________ Management Consider making zero waste a goal. ______________________________________ Anticipate your waste. Consider what materials will be generated during your event so you can select appropriate receptacles (trash, paper, cans/bottles, or compost bins). _______________________________________________________________ Create clearly marked and conveniently placed waste collection areas that are staffed with identifiable waste advisors who can educate attendees and monitor what is going into each bin. _______________________________________________________________ Use a color-coordinated system and large, easy to read signage for bins, to help attendees easily recognize and distinguish between recycling, compost, and trash bins.
