Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 17, 2017 Mission: We the people of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, seek to be an example of the presence of God through our Christian Catholic worship, education, service and stewardship of all God’s gifts. We celebrate our diversity of age, culture, language, and view points as a sign of God’s all powerful and ever-present love in our community of faith. We strive to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ to evangelize and to respond in love, as well as compassion to our community in Honolulu, to be a welcoming place to all who seek the grace, fellowship, and love of God. Dominic Nguyen VHM Deacon Anthony Nguyen It has been said that one of the most distinctive features of Jesus’ teachings is the Schedule of Masses exhortation to forgive those who have offended us. Jesus was very explicit about this, Sunday 6:15am, 8:00am and he left us his own example by forgiving his executioners while he hung dying on the cross. 10:30am, 6:00pm Saturday Vigil 5:00pm Forgiving Mondays - Thursdays 6:30am Quite a bit is written today on the question of reconciliation. Until recently we have thought the process begins with the offender repenting of the offense and then asking for Fridays & Saturdays 8:00am forgiveness. Those who have done serious research in the area disagree. They believe that Vietnamese Masses the process must begin with the one offended offering forgiveness and that this willingness Sunday 3:30pm to forgive transforms one from being a victim to being a survivor. Furthermore, such Saturday Vigil 7:00pm magnanimity is what may touch the heart of the offender, who may thus be transformed from being an offender even to becoming a friend. Mon, Tues, Thurs 5:30pm It is very difficult to forgive someone who has offended us, because it may be that our honor Sacrament of Reconciliation is at stake or that our very person has been threatened. Very deep feelings are involved. Wednesdays 6:15pm-7:00pm When we have been hurt, we want to inflict pain in return; we want to even the score. Most people would not blame us for feeling like this. In fact, they would even encourage us in Eucharistic Adoration our retaliation. However, retaliation is the way of the world and not the way of the Lord. Exposition Once again the disciples of Jesus follow a less-travel road. Wednesdays 6:15pm-7:00pm Being Forgiven Adoration Chapel Today we have yet another example of how disciples must give what they have been given. Everyday 6:00am-10:30pm The gospel suggests that nothing another owes us can compare with what we owe God. If God has been so generous in forgiving us, surely we can be generous in forgiving others. Co-Cathedral Office How many times must we be willing to forgive? As many times as God is willing to forgive Monday-Friday 8:00am-12:00pm us. If we cannot forgive others, perhaps we have not been transformed by God’s forgiveness 1:00pm-4:30pm of us. It may be we have not yet been transformed enough. The process of becoming a Saturdays 8:30am-12:00pm forgiving person takes time. For some it may take a lifetime. Only little by little are our pettiness and indignation reduced and our desire to strike back diminished. Perhaps we need Sundays Closed to be forgiven seventy-seven times before we can forgive once, but as disciples of Jesus we Phone 808-521-1700 are expected to give the forgiveness we have been given. Fax 808-599-3629 Pay What You Owe E-mail [email protected] Lest we think forgiveness provides an easy way out for offenders, we are reminded that Website www.cocathedral.org ultimately justice will prevail. If we remain untransformed by God’s forgiveness of us, as Address 712 North School St. demonstrated by our unwillingness to forgive others, then we are liable to judgment. And Honolulu, HI 96817 this judgment often springs from within us. Our unwillingness to forgive can eat away at us, and we can carry hurts from childhood far into adult years. A slight from a co-worker Saint Theresa School can bore itself so deeply into our consciousness that we become obsessed by it. Forgiving School Principal others, as difficult as that may be, is in the long run much easier than bearing the weight of Conception (Bernie) Gora resentfulness, vindictiveness, and unresolved frustration. When we forgive we truly begin to be healed.
