The Athletics programme takes place from 20 to 26 August 2014. This handbook provides a statistical preview to those competitions, detailing world bests and the performances of the athletes who will feature in the battle for medals and personal bests. An associated ‘sport initiation’ will take place alongside the competition programme. IAAF / Nestlé Kids Athletics, the flagship project of the IAAF School / Youth programme, will be demonstrated to the Chinese public on each of the seven days of the Athletics in Nanjing. The Youth Olympic Games is more than just another sporting event for young people, it is also about balancing sport, culture and education. The IAAF is conscious of the need for sport to be fun especially at this age group. We wish to encourage these young athletes to retain a desire for physical activity and a healthy life style into their adult lives. Helping us to inspire the youth in Nanjing are the IAAF’s Athlete Role Models for the Youth Olympic Games, Kajsa Bergqvist, Dwight Phillips and Liu Xiang. These great champions who will live in the Athletes’ Village during the games, will be on hand to support the athletes before, during and after their competitions. With such inspiration the Athletics competitions of Nanjing 2014 are sure to be an outstanding success. It is the fourth edition of the series that began at 1st Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010, followed with statistics handbooks issued for 2011 and 2013 World Youth Championships, respectively held in Lille and Donetsk. This new edition keeps the same structure as previous, with four main paragraphs: -Medallists of eight previous World Youth Championships (1999-2013) and Youth Olympic Games (2010). -IAAF Youth Best Performances. -IAAF 2013 World Outdoor Youth Lists. -IAAF World Youth All Time Lists. This book, as its previous editions, is compiled by the IAAF Statistics & Documentation Senior Manager, Ottavio Castellini, and by Félix Capilla, an external IAAF Consultant for Statistics. General notes We want to provide this book’s readers with some further explanations that you will find hereunder. First of all, we would like to draw your attention on the fact that the compilation is made according the traditional rules of any athletics compilation of results. The lists have two levels: - Performers: athletes will appear once with their best performance if it is within this limit. - Performances: athletes will appear every time they record a performance within this limit. World Best Performances The Lists are preceded by the World Youth Best Performances (there are no World Records for this category) recognised by the IAAF (updated as at 28 July 2014). TOP Youth Lists The compilation of the Youth Lists is based on the following criterions: • Youth athletes: the athletes belonging to this category in 2014 are those born in 1997-98 (according to the IAAF Rules) but in the Lists some athletes are even younger, for a matter of statistical accuracy of the information, although they are not eligible to compete in the Games. • Hurdles
