Download a few set of top support boxes for every service you want, but when you have one that runs Android, it's usually a workaround. One of the most disappointing omissions from the Android TV app catalog is Amazon Prime Video, but you change this in just a few simple steps and does not require rooting. Amazon usually puts its apps on each platform, but with Prime Video the company is clearly selective. You have to own one of your devices to get the full experience, or just work to work this problem. That's what we're going to do right now. You actually have a few options to choose from, so your choice: ChromeCast ItIf you have a computer with a browser you can throw a tab filled with Amazon Prime Video right to your Android TV. This may seem less ideal, but if you have a nearby laptop with a reasonable amount of computing power you can just play the video in the tab and leave it in the background. When you install a video on a full screen while casting, Chrome knows that you don't want a full screen absorption on your computer. This will keep video windows in the browser, but provide a complete experience on your Android TV. So how does all this work? Follow these simple steps: Open Google Chrome on your computer. Install the Google Cast extension and follow the setup instructions. Tap the Google Cast icon in the browser bar (as shown above) and select the Android TV device you want to throw at. (If it doesn't show up, click the options for the option to search for new devices.) Play the Amazon Prime video you chose to throw and click the full screen button. Enjoy! That's it. There's a wee bit of lag, but nothing you'll notice since you're going to pretty much ignore the video on your computer and just watch it on TV. You won't hear the sound from your computer as well, fortunately, but you can see the video in the cast tab so you can pause, quickly forward, rewind, and so on. With this option you can limit the quality of the video stream, but in my experience it looks pretty good all that counts and it is the fastest, easiest way to get any video you want on your Android TV. Install Amazon Prime Video LauncherIf you want to watch Amazon Prime Video without the help of an extra computer, you can reboot the app that will give you a comparable experience as that of Fire TV. Here's how you do it: Surprise, surprise! Go to the XDA forums and download Prime Video Launcher. (You may also have to download Amazon Prime Video APK as well, but more on that later.) On Android TV, open the settings and visit the Safety and Restrictions section. The first choice should be unknown sources. Turn it on. (Amazon Prime Video won't work without it.) You can sideload the APK in a different way if you prefer, but I got it on my device quickly with ES File Explorer. If you don't have that on your Android TV, download it now. Open ES File Explorer and find the cloud or network service you're using. I used Dropbox's (cloud service) and dropped THE APK into a folder in my Dropbox account. If you have Dropbox, Google Drive, or something else you prefer, link it to ES File Explorer. If you synchronize APK with by recording, when you download the folder you put in ES File Explorer, you can simply select it and open it. When you open Prime Video Launcher, you will be asked confirm its installation, but in a few minutes it will open. You will be asked if you want to install The Amazon Prime VOD that you need in order to actually watch anything. Confirm that you want to install the latest version and wait for the installation to be completed. In some cases it may not download and you will have to install it manually. Just repeat the process, but sideload one of the VOD APKs found in this XDA thread forum. Once Amazon Prime VOD is successfully installed, open it and log into your Amazon account. That's it! Now you can watch Amazon Prime Video on your Android TV as it was actually meant to be there. Hopefully someday Amazon will allow us to install an app where we like without this extra effort, but at least you have some simple methods to get the job done right now.
