Extracts from the Log Book of Ewell National Boys School October 1862 – February 1898 SHC: 6246/1/1 The information in this document should be read in conjunction with the introductory webpage. 1862 Oct 2 The quarterly list of proficiency drawn out & suspended in the school room, showing the relative attainments of each child in the upper classes as determined by above examination [the Quarterly Examination]. Oct 3 The usual quarterly reports made up & forwarded to each parent, setting forth each child’s conduct & attainments during the past quarter, as gathered from the marks entered weekly in a book kept for the purpose & the list of proficiency referred to above, whereby – on comparison with the last report – each parent is enabled to judge of the progress made by his child during the said quarter. Oct 13 Present staff of Monitors, each paid at the rate of 1/6 per quarter. 2nd Class C. Theobald, 3rd Class W. Hills, 4th Class W. Mountford. Firelighter – G. Birdseye (2/6 per quarter) Sweepers – W. Hills & J. Miller (3 each per week) Oct 21 A. Giles appointed sweeper in the room of J. Miller resigned (being a singer in choir). Nov 15 The practice of writing abstracts of lessons & dictation exercises in books kept for the purpose introduced this day into the first class. Dec 1 S. Buckman appointed firelighter in the room of C. Bashford. Dec 8 C. Bashford returned office as firelighter and monitor on expressing penitence for his fault & determined to amend. Dec 23 The annual Xmas Examination of the upper classes before the parents & subscribers held this day at 2½ pm. Holidays commenced. 1863 Jan 2 Received this day from the Committee of Council the following summary of the Inspector’s Report upon the School:- “The Character of the School may on the whole be pronounced a fair one “particularly as regards the Master’s intentions”. Jan 12 School recommenced after the Xmas Vacation. S. Buckman commenced his duties as firelighter. 13 Rev. Sir George Glyn gave the usual weekly Scripture Lesson to the first class. 20 E. Grantham appointed pumper in the room of A. Giles (resigned). 23 Missionary Lecture with Disolving [sic] Views exhibited by Mr. Newton to a crowded audience. 28 Lecture on Ancient Egypt illustrated from the Monuments by the Oxygen Lantern. Feb 1 William Hills expelled for dishonesty, his place as a free boy filled by William Cox, as a monitor by A. Sykes, as a sweeper by C. Bashford & as a singer by W. Channell. Credit: Shelia Ross Feb.2012 Log Book of Ewell National Boys School 1 11 Meeting of Sunday School Teachers this evening to hear a model lesson given to a class of children by a London Teacher, which was followed by criticism of the same & an address to the parents on the same subject. 17 Rev. Sir G. Glyn gave the usual Scripture Lesson. 19 C. Bashford expelled the School for dishonesty & W. Hills re-admitted 24 Rev. Sir. G. Glyn gave the usual Scripture Lesson Mar 2 J. Slemaker appointed Monitor to 3rd & 4th classes. 10 A holiday given (marriage of the Prince of Wales). 18 A half holiday given to allow of preparing the School room for the Annual Supper & Lecture to the Ewell Working Mens’ Bible Union. The members were addressed on the occasion by Judge Payne. 25 A half holiday. A Confirmation held by the Lord Bishop of Winchester. April 6-10 Easter Vacation 13 Annual Missionary Sale of Work held in these rooms, the children were addressed at 3 pm. A further meeting in the evening at 7 pm. 14 School Reopened after the Easter Vacation, very thin attendance of children. 27 W. Elliott appointed pumper in the room of E. Grantham (resigned). May 1 Lecture given by Mr. P. R. Lempriere on the “Power of Kindness”. 14 The children attended Divine Service at church, it being Ascension Day. 19-22 Thin attendance owing to Epsom Races this week. 25 A holiday being Whit Monday June 1 The Monitors reappointed to different classes. A. Sykes to the 3rd & 4th, W. Mountford to the 5th & J. Slemaker to the 6th. Sixteen boys kept in to rewrite their dictation exercise. 4 Rev. Sir. G. Glyn gave a missionary address to the combined schools in the afternoon. July 1 The Annual Treat to the children held in Rev. Sir G. Glyn’s grounds. 10 School examined this afternoon by Rev. Sir. G. Glyn & Rev. H. Davidson. Aug 7 The Harvest Vacation commenced (4 weeks). Sep 7 The School re-opened after Harvest Vacation, with a fair attendance of scholars. 30 A ploughing match accounts for thin attendance this afternoon. Oct 5 The afternoon school commenced at 1.30 pm for the first time instead of 2 pm as heretofore. 13 The first class examined on the Travels of St. Paul by Rev. H. Davidson. 29 Ewell Fair Day accounts for thin attendance. Nov 3 No evening school this evening, the Room being required for a Temperance Lecture. 6 A holiday given to prepare the rooms for a concert. Dec 9 Night Scholars unable to meet this evening, the room being required for a Lecture by Mr. Lempriere. 22 Evening Scholars unable to meet, the room being required for a Temperance Lecture. 23 Annual Examination of the upper classes of the School held this day at 2.30 pm (thin attendance of subscribers & friends owing to the prevalence of smallpox in neighbourhood). 1864 Jan 18 School re-opened after the Xmas vacation, very thin attendance on account of small-pox. G. Glyn to the three departments assembled in the Infant School. 15 A half holiday given to allow of preparing the room for the Annual Supper & Lecture to the Ewell Working Men’s Bible Union. 24 The last meeting of Night School for the season. April 4 Day School re-commenced work after the Easter Vacation (one week). 5 W. Hills appointed teacher to 2nd class, in the room of C. Theobald, whose attendance is become too irregular to admit of his continuing in that post. 25 A holiday. The Annual Missionary Sale of Work held in these rooms, the children addressed at 3 pm, a public meeting at 7 pm. 2 May 1864 Conducted by Mr. George Ayres 2/2 without assistance W. A. Brookfield H.M.I. May 5 A half holiday the Master being unwell. 12 Thin attendance on account of the Fair. 16 A holiday being Whit Monday. June 9 Missionary Address given by the Rev. Sir. G. Glyn to the three departments assembled in the Infant School. 10 A half holiday in afternoon to allow the Teachers to attend a Missionary Meeting at Cheam. 16 The Annual Treat held on the Rev. Sir. G. Glyn’s grounds. July 7 Rev. Sir G. Glyn gave a Missionary address to the children in the Infants Room. 25 Communication received from the Privy Council stating the amount of the Grant for 1863-4 viz: £74.1.9 + £. Summary of Inspector’s Report: (Boys) “This School is in an efficient & satisfactory condition”. Accompanying Remarks: - “I am directed to request that the Class Registers may be marked conformably with the 12th Supplementary Rule; & I am to state that in future the 9th Rule will be strictly enforced. All children belonging to the highest class, who are examined, should be presented at least as high as the fourth standard (Art. 52a RC)”. Aug 4 Broke up for the Harvest Vacation. Sept 5 School reopened after harvest holidays. Oct 5 Thin attendance owing to the Ploughing Match. Nov10&11 Two days holiday to prepare Rooms for a Concert. Dec 23 School closed for a fortnight’s Vacation. 1865 Jan 9 School recommenced after Xmas holidays. Six children admitted from the Infant School. 11 No evening school, rooms being required for Mr. Lempriere’s Lecture on “John Howard”. 18 No evening school Master asked to attend the Sunday School Teachers’ Annual Meeting. 20 Missionary Lecture with Dissolving Views. 26, 27 Severe weather accounts for the thin attendance during these two days, heavy rain followed by snow. 31 No evening school, room being required for Mr. Walter’s Lecture. Apr 3 W. Mountford appointed Assistant with 1/- per week. 13 School closed for the Easter week holiday. 24 School would have recommenced but for the Annual Missionary Sale of Work held this day. 25-28 This attendance owing partly to Epsom Spring Races. May 5 W. Mountford examined as candidate for pupil teachership at Epsom Nat. School. 11 Annual Inspection took place. Inspector Revd. T.D. Sharpe, assisted by Mr. Bryant. A half holiday given by the Inspector in the afternoon. More oral teaching required in the opinion of the Inspector. Head Teacher – George Ayers. Certificate 2nd Class 2nd Division. 12 Ewell Fair Day, thin attendance in afternoon. 31 Derby Day, very thin attendance. June 5 A holiday, being Whit Monday. 13 Report of Privy Council received for 1864-5: - “The School is well taught. The elementary knowledge is good throughout the School. The religious knowledge is satisfactory.
