Containing an attractive mix of rural and urban areas, the Health Authority covers 162 square miles in total - extending from the parish boundaries of Doddington, Lynsted and Teynham in the east to those of Cuxton, Cliffe, Halling and Frindsbury in the west, and including the Isles of Sheppey and Grain. In the west of the district and comprising of Chatham, Gillingham, Rochester and Strood, the Medway Towns collectively form the largest urban area in Kent, with a total population of 250,000. The eastern one-third of the district is centred upon the Borough of Swale and includes the rapidly developing town of Sittingbourne as a focal point. The Health Authority has just completed a period of exciting change. Medway Maritime Hospital now serves a population of 360,000 people in the Medway and Swale areas., employs around 3,000 people, and has an annual budget of over £100 million. In 1999 it doubled in size, with the opening of a £60 million extension. As Medway Maritime is an associate teaching hospital of the University of London, its staff teach undergraduates from Guys, Kings and St Thomas' School of Medicine. With fast road, rail and sea links to London, the beautiful Kent Coast and the Continent, Medway Health Authority offers unrivalled travel, leisure and communication possibilities. The district is rich in maritime and Dickensian history. Chatham's Historic Dockyard (formerly the most important naval base of its time) now provides visitors with a fascinating glimpse of naval history. Many local scenes became settings for the novels of Charles Dickens, and today the City of Rochester, in addition to its spectacular Cathedral and Castle, acts as the Dickens centre of England. With superb leisure and sporting facilities such as a local Ski Centre and Ice Skating Rink, two major indoor shopping centres, beautiful coastlines and easy access to the 'Garden of England' with its hop-fields and attractive public houses waiting to be explored, there is little opportunity to get bored.
