Andante Cantabile for Viola and piano Edna Frida Pietsch (1894–1982) AVS Publications 033 Preface Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Edna Frida Pietsch (1894–1982) would spend her entire career there as an integral part of the city’s musical life. Having studied both piano and composition, she was a piano teacher to generations, and her compositions were frequently played, with her orchestral works garnering performances by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Her renown and influence as a composer in Wisconsin was such that the state honored her as “the dean of Wisconsin composers” in 1981. With a compositional style firmly rooted in nineteenth-century Romanticism, Pietsch was at odds with the avant-garde writing that was in vogue for most of her life, and her compositions were not widely disseminated beyond Wisconsin. The manuscripts for two viola compositions by Pietsch are located in the Edna Pietsch Collection, Mills Music Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison: a single-movement Viola Concerto and this Andante Cantabile, for viola and piano. Neither work is dated, though the Viola Concerto appears in sources as early as 1956. This new AVS edition of the Andante Cantabile is based on four sources from the Pietsch Collection: a piano score in pencil (with the viola part notated alternatingly in bass and treble clef), a fair copy piano score in ink, a viola part in pencil, and a fair copy viola part in ink. The sources contain multiple discrepancies, and this edition represents the best attempt to reconcile those differences; editorial changes have been made without comment.
