NFL draft 2019 grades: Evaluating the Broncos and every other team’s picks By Ryan O’Halloran Denver Post April 29, 2019 A team-by-team recap of this weekend’s NFL draft: NFC Arizona Cardinals A — The Cardinals selected immediate starters/contributors with their first five picks: QB Kyler Murray, CB Byron Murphy, WR Andy Isabella, DE Zach Allen and WR Hakeem Butler. With play-caller/coach Kliff Kingsbury, the Cardinals may not be successful, but they’ll be interesting. Atlanta Falcons C-plus — The Falcons ignored cornerback until round 5 (Jordan Miller). First-rounders Chris Lindstrom (No. 14) and Kaleb McGary (No. 31 after a trade-up) will start at right guard and right tackle, respectively. Carolina Panthers B — Liked what the Panthers did early. DE Brian Burns will team with veteran Bruce Irvin to replace Julius Peppers. LT Greg Little will get a chance to beat out 2017 second-round pick Taylor Moton and QB Will Grier could stop the revolving back-up spot. Chicago Bears D — If you factor in the Khalil Mack trade (which costs them a first-round pick), the grade would be different. But the Bears had only five picks (one in the first 125). RB David Montgomery (round 3) will back up Mike Davis. Dallas Cowboys C — No first-round pick because of the Amari Cooper trade. The Cowboys had nine picks, but only two in the top 116. They chose two defensive ends (Joe Jackson and Jalen Jelks) and running backs (Tony Pollard and Mike Weber) apiece. Detroit Lions C-minus— Tough to be fired up about anything the Lions did after tight end T.J. Hockenson (Round 1). LB Jahlani Tavai was a reach in round 2. Green Bay Packers D — A tough first round for GM Brian Gutekunst. At No. 12, he reached for DE Rashan Gary, who has a bad shoulder, sub-par statistics a new position (OLB). He then really reached at No. 21 for S Darnell Savage (could have traded down for him). Los Angeles Rams B — The Rams’ first pick was No. 61 (S Taylor Rapp), but they had four of the top 100. RB Darrell Henderson in Round 3 suggests the Rams want to decrease Todd Gurley’s workload. Minnesota Vikings B-plus — Drafted the top-rated center in Garrett Bradbury at No. 18, which was a big-time need and showed the Vikings have learned not to ignore the interior offensive line issues. Getting TE Irv Smith at No. 50 was a coup. New Orleans Saints C-minus — The Saints didn’t have a first-round pick, traded last year to take DE Marcus Davenport. Their only top-100 pick, though, was a good one. They moved up to No. 48 for C Erik McCoy, who could start right away. New York Giants F — The only reason why QB Daniel Jones should have been selected sixth was if Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock were already off the board. CB Deandre Baker at No. 30 instead of Byron Murphy or Rock Ya- Sin? They got a better corner at No. 108 (Julian Love). Still don’t understand what their plan is moving forward. Philadelphia Eagles B-plus — GM Howie Roseman made only five picks, but had three in the top 57. LT Andre Dillard (No. 22 after moving up three spots) will eventually replace Jason Peters, RB Miles Sanders (round 2) could be the feature back in 2020 and WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside (Round 2) will be an instant red zone threat. San Francisco 49ers C-minus — Edge rusher Nick Bosa (round 1) will be productive while teamed with recently acquired Dee Ford. But can they make up for a suspect secondary? The 49ers did not select a cornerback or safety. Receivers in rounds 2-3 (Deebo Samuel/Jalen Hurd)? A punter (Mitch Wishnowsky) in Round 4? Seattle Seahawks A – The Seahawks started the draft with five picks and ended with 12. DE L.J. Collier (No. 29) will help replace Frank Clark, S Marquise Blair (Round 2) fits the thumping model of Kam Chancellor/Earl Thomas and WRs D.K. Metcalf (Round 2) and Gary Jennings (Round 4) will get a chance to play right away. Tampa Bay Buccaneers C-minus — The Buccaneers passed on OLB Josh Allen for ILB Devin White at No. 5. They passed on CBs Greedy Williams and Joejuan Johnson to take CB Sean Bunting at No. 39. Their best move would have been a trade for QB Josh Rosen. Washington Redskins A-minus — The Redskins showed uncharacteristic patience and QB Dwayne Haskins fell to them at No. 15. But then they got greedy, dealing a 2020 second-rounder Indianapolis to move up 20 spots for DE Montez Sweat. WR Terry McLaurin (Round 3), Haskins’ Ohio State teammate, adds speed. AFC Denver Broncos B — John Elway didn’t like anybody at No. 10 so he traded down to take TE Noah Fant and pick up an extra second-round pick that allowed him to move up 10 spots for QB Drew Lock immediately after taking instant right guard starter Dalton Risner. Drafting a quarterback in Round 2 is low-risk. DE Dre’Mont Jones (third round) has a pass-rush burst that should get him on the field right away. Baltimore Ravens A — WR Marquise Brown (No. 25) can stretch the field, OLB Jaylon Ferguson (No. 85) will replace Terrell Suggs, WR Myles Boykin (No. 93) ran a 4.42-second 40 at the Combine and RB Justice Hill (No. 113) will be a good fit as Mark Ingram’s backup. Buffalo Bills B — Staying put at No. 9 allowed them to take DT Ed Oliver and the Bills traded up to two spots to No. 38 for instant starting RT Cody Ford. RB Devin Singletary (Round 3) will learn behind LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore. Cincinnati Bengals B-plus — The Bengals stocked the depth chart with seven Day 3 picks. In Days 1-2, they did well with OT/G Jonah Williams (No. 11), TE Drew Sample (Round 2) and LB Germaine Pratt (Round 3). They also added a developmental QB in Ryan Finley (Round 4). Cleveland Browns B — GM John Dorsey traded his first-round pick for WR Odell Beckham. He used a fifth-round pick to move up three spots for CB Greedy Williams at No. 46. In the fifth round, LB Mack Wilson was a great value selection. Houston Texans D — Another confusing draft. Desperately needed offensive line help, they went with Alabama State OT Tytus Howard at No. 23 instead of Jawaan Taylor or Greg Little. The Texans took two cornerbacks, including Lonnie Johnson (Round 2), but he may be their fourth guy. Indianapolis Colts A — Another great draft for GM Chris Ballard. He moved out of Round 1 for a 2020 second-round pick and still got CB Rock Ya-Sin at No. 34. OLB Ben Banogu (Round 2) will be a pass-rushing threat. The Colts picked seven defensive players. Jacksonville Jaguars B-minus — DE/OLB Josh Allen fell in the Jaguars’ lap at No. 7 and they didn’t screw it up. They traded up in round 2 for RT Jawaan Taylor, a projected first-rounder. Kansas City Chiefs C-plus — Trading for DE/OLB Frank Clark meant the Chiefs didn’t pick until No. 56 (WR Mecole Hardman). The Chiefs eventually addressed their secondary with S Juan Thornhill (Round 2) and CB Rashad Fenton (Round 6). L.A. Chargers B-minus — We figured the Chargers would go offensive tackle in Round 1, but instead, it was DT Jerry Tillery (No. 29). A great pick at No. 60 in S Nasir Adderley, who can cover and form a great duo with Derwin James. Miami Dolphins A — Can we count the Josh Rosen trade as part of its draft class? Yes. He is owed only $6.3 million over the next three years, an inexpensive flier that could be a boon. DT Christian Wilkins (No. 13) can be an effective interior player and RT Isaiah Prince (Round 6) may quickly rise up the depth chart. New England Patriots A — Bill Belichick drafted a first-round WR for the first time in N’Keal Harry, who will be counted on to win downfield. Round 3 was a home run — DE Chase Winovich, RB Damien Harris and OT Yodney Cajuste. Plus, QB Jarrett Stidham (Round 4) will get a chance to observe Tom Brady. N.Y. Jets B-plus — The Jets didn’t out-think themselves at No. 3; they just chose the draft’s best player (DT Quinnen Williams). OLB Jachai Polite (Round 3) did everything wrong in the pre-draft process, but his game tape could make him a pass-rushing steal. Oakland Raiders D — Three of the top 27 picks and four of the top 40. Clelin Ferrell (No. 4) could have been available later, RB Josh Jacobs (No. 24) was a no-brainer and S Johnathan Abram (No. 27) will eventually replace Karl Joseph. We did like CB Isaiah Johnson (No. 129), who made a pre-draft visit to the Broncos. Pittsburgh Steelers B — It cost them their second-round pick and a 2020 third-rounder, but the Steelers traded with the Broncos to draft LB Devin Bush (No. 10). Some may view WR Diontae Johnson (Round 3) as a reach, but the Steelers have successfully drafted many receivers. Tennessee Titans B-minus — The Titans drafted injured DT Jeffery Simmons (No. 19, torn ACL), accurately figuring he wouldn’t have been available if he was healthy. WR A.J. Brown (Round 2) joins new WR Adam Humphries.
