Ever since we were children, September brought a new school year, new shoes, new school supplies and of course, the High Holidays. A new year! Brandeis National Committee - Phoenix Chapter is also an exciting place to be at this time of year. We have newly formed study groups, exciting programming and many members joining our award-winning chapter. To celebrate the new year, the Programming Committee, led by Gladys Simon (VP of Programming), is planning an outstanding Fall Event on October 19. The details of this day are included in this issue of the Beat. Come enjoy the sensational jazz of Dennis Rowland and the delicious cuisine with BNC friends old and new. We urge you to save the date, mark it on your calendar, invite your friends, family, and even your husband/wife or significant other and join us. Send your registration in today so that you can be a part of this 2012 Brandeis year kickoff. Our study group guide became available last month and there are still openings! It is never too late to join our exciting study groups. Look through the guide and you will see that the study group fun is still about to begin. Our membership Vice Presidents, Joyce Gordon and Kathleen Witkin, along with their committee never stop working and planning. They have been active all summer and are now planning new and prospective member events for fall and rest of the year. We continue to grow and attract the most stimulating and wonderful women (and men) of the Valley. We are most proud to announce that the Phoenix Chapter of BNC has been named Chapter of the Year by the Brandeis National Committee for a second year in a row. We do not know whether this has ever happened before but what we do know is that as Co-Presidents, we are blessed with the women of our board, the excellent chairs and members of the Programming, Membership and Study Group committees. Together they work to make Phoenix Chapter one of the best in the nation. We sincerely thank them all for their dedication and effort. Imagine a beautiful lakeside pavilion, looking out over the green links at the newly renovated and redecorated McCormick Ranch Golf Club, with clear views to Camelback and Mummy Mountains. Now imagine the pavilion filled with gorgeously appointed tables, and Brandeis friends, old and new, enjoying a sumptuous 3-course lunch while catching up on everyone's summer activities. Now imagine yourself at one of those tables, fork poised to savor the last bite of a divine dessert as you listen to the sweet strains of jazz music and song by Dennis Rowland. Dennis controls his silky-sooth voice masterfully, weaving his skill and his repertoire through a history of Jazz standards, while serving up contemporary tunes with spontaneity. Born and raised in Detroit, Dennis Rowland was brought up listening to his parents' Jazz and Gospel records while also immersing himself in the local Motown sound. Dream became reality when Rowland joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1977. He spent seven years with them, and shared the stage with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Tony Bennett. A resident of Phoenix since 1987, Rowland has received numerous local awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year (Best of Arizona Jazz, 1999) and the Friend of Phoenix Award. He continues to be an international attraction, as well as appearing in a variety of theatrical productions, and recording three CD's released by Concord. Join Us! Friday, October 19, 2012 11:00 am - 2:30 pm SEPTEMBER, 2012 Brandeis National Committee - Phoenix Chapter 4 Study Group News Welcome to the 2012 - 2013 Brandeis Study Group Season! We have 10 new groups this year and your favorites are returning, for a total of 38 groups from which to choose. Whatever your interests are, we have at least one group for you! Here are just some of the choices this year: GAMES - We have Bridge, Mah-Jongg, Canasta for Beginners. INTELLECTUAL - We have continuing Book Groups and Contemporary Issues groups, as well as our ever-popular Arizona Authors Speaker Series. Study with the Best is returning with a series about 20 th century Jewish issues as presented on Broadway, using materials authored by Brandeis University faculty. IN THE COMMUNITY - New this year, we have a unique group called Share the Gift of Reading. This group gives back to the community by offering a program that teaches the participants new and effective ways to help students learn to read. FOOD - Our two Lunch Bunch groups are back, along with Neighborhood Haunts. ACTIVE GROUPS - Our popular Hiking group is returning, along with several new active groups: Brisk Walking, Golf and Yoga! ART - Art Around the Valley and Artist Studio Tours are both returning, along with a new group about Jewish Art. MOVIES - We have two returning groups: one with lunch after a morning movie and one with an afternoon movie followed by Happy Hour. MUSIC - The beloved Phoenix Symphony Lecture Recital Series is back with four great performances scheduled. VALLEY ADVENTURES - Boomers is returning, along with Men of Brandeis and the Cultural Sites group. Our new Genealogy group will be an adventure into our own ancestry.
