Editor: Peter Stevens & Christine Orford, Email:[email protected] g Please Note - Walk Details must be in .one week before each coach excursion. Today's Coach Walks starting points: A: Conwy B+: Colwyn Bay B: Conwy C: Conwy Grade : A Distance 10.5 miles / 17 km Leader: Dave Colbert Y CARNEDDAU FACH Climbing 3,000 ft / 920 m Y Carneddau forms the largest area of sustained high ground in Great Britain outwith the Scottish Highlands. At the coast, the hills are of a lower elevation and have been formed into steep cliffs by the sea. This walk traverses several of these hills, including Mynydd y Dref (Conwy Mountain), Alltwen and Foel Lûs whilst taking in a significant length of Llwyber y Gogledd – the North Wales Coastal Path. From Conwy, we traverse Mynydd y Dref (244m/801ft) to the prominent cone of Alltwen (255m/837ft) before descending steeply into the valley of the Afon Gyrach below Bwlch Sychnant. A steep climb from Capelulo above the Fairy Glen leads to the summit of Foel Lûs, at 362m/1,188ft the highest point on the walk, with extensive views along the North Wales coast. Rejoining the North Wales Coastal Path at Ty’n-y-ffrith, we cross the Afon Gyrach to reach the broad ridge of Cefn Llechen and the flat top of Maen Esgob. The NWCP leads down to Bwlch Sychnant from where, this being an ‘A’ walk and these being relatively little hills, we return to Conwy along Mynydd y Dref. Mwynhau!! Grade : B+ Distance 14 miles/ 22.5 km Leader: Val Walmsley North Wales Coastal Path Climbing 1131 ft/ 345 m Leaving the coach in Colwyn Bay, we join the North Wales Coastal Path to Rhos on Sea passing St Trillo's Chapel. We proceed to Little Orme Head and drop down into Llandudno rounding the bay towards the pier. Then continue along Marine Drive, passing St Tudno's Well till we reach a path off which takes us to the summit of Great Orme with fine views in all directions, especially as we come down the path to Gogarth with Conwy Estuary facing us. We continue past the North Wales Golf Club to Degannwy where we hope to do some beach walking. Crossing the Conwy Bridge we enter Conwy and continue in coastal fashion round the Marina where we retrace our route back into Conwy. Grade : B Distance 7½ miles/ 12 km Leaders: Barry Mather Conwy Mountain Climbing 1500 ft/ 457 m As we leave Conwy heading north watch out for arrows or boiling oil from the castle. Following the River Conwy we pass the smallest house in Wales and heading west cross the A547 and join the North Wales path over the Conwy Mountains. After a gradual ascent we can look back and see Conwy Castle in the distance and looking north we should have magnificent views of Conwy Bay. As we follow the ridge we pass the Iron Age hill fort of Castell Caer Seion. We descend to the Sychnant Pass then on to Llechwedd and after crossing the Bry-Seir road we arrive back at Conwy. Grade: C Conwy Harbour & North Wales Path Distance 6 miles / 9.65 km Leader: Peter Stevens Climbing 590 ft / 180 m It's difficult to find a walk around Conwy that doesn't have any climbing in it, hence the 590ft/180m. On the plus side, the majority of the climbing is gradual and the views of the Conwy valley make it worthwhile. Starting from the coach park at the back of Conwy Castle (toilets available), we follow the Llanrwst Road (B5106) for a short while before turning west through a small housing estate and onto field paths which take us to Bryn Bychan (Spa on the map). From here we head north west through a small hamlet with a large and impressive building on our left. Passing Bryn-mawr and Ravenscraig we gradually climb passed the 'Lodge' before meeting the North Wales Path near the Sychnant Pass Road. Crossing the Sychnant Pass (usually has an ice cream van), we follow the North Wales Path for a while until it starts to climb the Conwy Mountain. At this point we leave the path and follow a track that skirts around the lower slope of the mountain back towards Conwy until we rejoin the North Wales Path as it descends from the mountain. Crossing over the railway and Bangor Road (A547) we now head north to take a look at the beautiful Conwy Marina before heading back into Conwy itself and the awaiting coach. Please remove muddy boots before boarding the coach & check. that you take all your belongings with you. Thank you. .
