He does not, however, enter into a detailed discussion of why G rill­ parzer based a particular event on a description from a particular source, and he does not interpret the effect of the authorfs inventions on the drama as a whole. More recent interpretations of Grillparzer occa­ sionally make statements about the author*s reliance on sources, but they mostly refer to isolated events in Grillparzer*s historical dramas or base their findings on a very limited selection of the source material available to Grillparzer. " " ~~ " - 2 read on, we discover that Silz based his statement exclu­ sively on one source, namely Ottokar von Steiermark*s flste rreichische Reimchronlk.2 Common also are statements to the effect that Grillparzer followed the historical events, at least the most important ones, closely in one play, but did not do the same in another play. Gustav Poliak, for instance, singles Eln Bruderzwist out as a historically accurate play,3 and Gerhard Heine claims that Grillparzer followed history in Kttnio Ottokars Glflck und Ende and in Bin Bruder- zwist in Habsburo but did not do so in Ein treuer Dlener seines Herrn.^- August Sauer, however, states that while in Ein Bruderzwist the character of Rudolf IX corresponds very closely to the authenticated character of the Emperor, Grillparzer showed complete independence from his sources in other aspects of the play.^ In his dissertation, Grillparzer*s Turn to the His­ torical Drama: KBnio Ottokars Glflck und Ende. The one is the "subjective" approach, meaning that the dramatist chooses a topic from history, but that his drama is a mixture of historical facts and the poet’s in­ vention; the other is the "objective" approach, in which historical events are dramatized on the stage. The the­ oretical foundation of the practice of the first group was laid by Herder, who advised the dramatist to take a topic from history, but should then, in order not to stifle his creative genius, not slavishly adhere to history. Goethe and Schiller could, as playwrights, belong to this category. On the other hand, August Kotzebue, Karoline Pichler, and Zacharias Werner are the main practitioners of the "ob­ jective" approach.^ Geitz classifies Grillparzer as a dram­ atist who places poetic truth above historical truth.? In the following study 1 will discuss Gri1lparzer*s use of historical sources for his three historical plays, Kttnlo Ottokars Gltick und Ende. Ein treuer Dlener seines Herrn. and Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburo. The study will in­ vestigate the sources and the manner in which they were used in the plays as well as Gri1lparzer*s own statements ^Henry Geitz, Jr., Gri1lparzer*s Turn to the His­ torical Dramas Kdnig Ottokars Gluck und Ende (unpublished Ph.6. dissertation, University of Wisconsin, 1961), pp. I4.—19* This information is not accurate. The theoretician who treated the nature of historical drama, decisive for German literature, was Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in Die HamburgIsche Dramaturgic. 7lbid.. p. 85. concerning this use. These three plays present a distinct group as they all deal with Austro-Hungarian history. Libussa and Die Jfldin von Toledo are very often considered historical dramas, but they deal more conspicuously with psychological problems and situations. Friedrich Sengle, for instance, does not consider these two plays to be his­ torical dramas.® In this study each of the three plays will be treated separately and the discussion of each play will be preceded by a longer or shorter recital of the historical facts which offered the material to the playwright. ®Friedrich Sengle, Das deutsche Geschichtsdrama (Stuttgart, 19f>2), p. §6. CHAPTER I HISTORICAL EVENTS AS BACKGROUND FOR k An IG OTTOKARS GLtiCK UND ENDE The period, 12ij.5-1273, preceding Rudolf of Habs- burg*s election as the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1273 is usually referred to as the Interregnum . 1 The situation of the Empire, unstable and torn by dissent ions since the premature death of Frederick Barbarossa*s son, Henry VI, in 1197, became chaotic In 12l|£ when Pope Innocent IV announced the deposition of Emperor Frederick II at the Council of Lyon. Bruno Gebhardt claims that the term Interregnum is misleading. This period was, indeed, the low point of a long crisis, but even during the almost thirty years in question the German throne was never vacant for very long and, in fact, for the most part it had two kings.^ In 12^ 6 , immediately after the excommunication of Frederick II, the ecclesiastical electors, however, without the concurrence of any secular princes, elected Henry Raspe 1Lynn Thorndike, The History of Medieval Europe (Cambridge, 1928), p. xvi, gives 1256-1273 as the dates for the Interregnum. ^Bruno Gebhardt, Handbuch der deutschen Geschichtc. 8 th ed. (Stuttgart, 1962), 17 3^2. to be the German king* or* strictly speaking, GeaenkBnlo. as Frederick 11 was still alive.3 But Henry Raspe died nine months later without having been crowned. It was difficult to find a successor as hardly anybody desired this hope­ lessly burdensome office. Finally* nineteen-year-old William of Holland was elected in October* 12lf.7« Again only the ecclesiastical princes participated (the Duke of Brabant was present* but he was not an elector)* and there­ fore William was often referred to as the Pfaffenkdnia. In 1251* however, a f t e r th e death of F red erick I I , William was recognized by the secular electors, too* and some cities elected him in special by-elections in 12f»2 . This new alliance of the secular princes with the powerful League of Renish Cities displeased the ecclesiastical princes* and the Archbishop of Cologne* Conrad of Hoch- staden* negotiated with Ottokar* King of Bohemia* in 1255 to find out whether he would be willing to become a can­ didate if William could be deposed.^ In spite of the ec­ clesiastical activity against him* William's position in Germany continued to gain strength* especially after the 3ibid.. p. 379. Ottokar Lorenz* however, thinks that the Archbishop*s trip to Prague was to win Ottokar*s support* as one of the electors* for Richard of Cornwall. Cambridge Medieval History is also of the opinion that the Archbishop's trip io Prague (summer* 1256), was to persuade Ottokar to-vote for Richard. death in 125>U of Conrad IV, the son of Frederick II, when even some of the Hohenstaufen supporters began to recognize William as the legitimate king.
