Guiding Eyes for the Blind Guide Dog Etiquette Many people are unsure of what to do when they see a guide dog. To pet or not to pet? Should other pets be allowed to greet the dog? Please read and share these important tips to keep guide dog teams safe. When a guide dog is in harness, they need to keep their attention on their handler. Never distract a working dog by petting it or by allowing your pet to interact. ALWAYS ASK. Even when the dog is out of harness and not actually guiding, always ask for permission before interacting. The dog needs to remain well-mannered in any public setting, working or not. Guide dogs get plenty of time to relax and play when they’re at home. NO PEOPLE FOOD. Don’t give the dog any “special” treatment that the dog’s owner would not want to continue. A scrap from the table “just this once” will come to be expected by the dog and can interfere with the owner’s efforts to maintain good behavior patterns. NEVER GRAB THE HARNESS. If you want to assist a person with a guide dog, ask frst. If your help is accepted, offer your left elbow. Please do not grab the guide dog, leash, harness, or the person’s arm. HELP SPOT SERVICE DOG FRAUD. It’s important to know the difference between a working dog and a pet. Guide dog teams have trained long and hard to maintain behavior that is appropriate for public access. The ability to travel freely in public space is a privilege that is earned and protected by law. If you encounter a service dog team that you believe to be fraudulent, simply state: “That dog is not appropriate for public access.” Alerting the handler, management, or law enforcement can make a big difference.
