Myanmar • Sagaing/Mandalay earthquake Situation Report No. 2 12 November This report is produced by OCHA on behalf of the Humanitarian Coordinator. It covers the period from 11 to 12 November 2012 - this is the last sitrep that will be produced on the event. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIOR ITIES • The Government indicates at least 7 causalities and some 52 people injured after an earthquake registering 6.8 on the Richter scale struck Sagaing Region some 50 kilometers north of Shwebo. Unofficial reports suggest the number of casualties and injured may be higher. • At least 102 houses, four schools, 48 departmental buildings and 21 religious buildings between Thabeikkyin and Shwebo Townships. Assessments of damages and casualties are ongoing. • Sagaing, Kyaukmyaung, Khin U, Mandalay, Amarapura and Kyaukse Townships of Sagaing and Mandalay Regions reported damage; Shwebo, Singu and Thabeikkyin were the worst affected. II. Situation Overview On the morning of 11 November an earthquake registering 6.8 on the Richter scale was recorded approximately 50 kilometers north of Shwebo Township in Sagaing Region. One aftershock was again felt approximately half hour later (5.0 magnitude), with another one of 5.8 on the Richter scale recorded felt in Mandalay at 17.26. The earthquake was felt across a wide region including Myanmar, Yunnan region in china, Lao PDR and Thailand. Reports of damage have come from Sagaing, Kyaukmyaung, Khin U, Mandalay, Amarapura and Kyaukse Townships of Sagaing and Mandalay Regions, with Shwebo, Singu and Thabeikkyin reporting the worst casualties, injuries and damage. The government indicates that there at least 7 causalities and 52 people injured and 4 people missing. While assessments are ongoing, damage to houses, public buildings and infrastructure is reported and unofficial sources suggest these figures may increase. Public buildings including schools, health centers and a hospital, Monasteries Temples and Pagodas across the affected area have reported damage to varying degrees. Damage is reported particularly along the Ayeyarwaddy River, which in part, forms the border between the two regions. At least 122 houses, four schools, 48 departmental buildings and 21 religious buildings have been reported damaged between Thabeikkyin and Shwebo Townships. In Thabeikkyin alone, three people are confirmed dead, but this figure is likely to be much higher. Some 35 more are reported injured. There have been serious damages to the Yadana Theinga Bridge which was under construction at Kyauk Myaung (Sagaing Division) and New Nyeing Village (Mandalay Region). Government reports one casualty, with four missing and at least 15 workers sustaining injuries, including six in serious conditions. There are reports suggest the number of casualties, injuries and missing could be higher. The Vice President, Dr. Sai Mauk Kham, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, U Phon Shwe, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Win Myint, Deputy Minister for Education U Aye Kyu, Deputy Minister for Electric Power U Aung Than Oo and Deputy Minister for Transport, U Han Sein accompanied the Mandalay Chief Minister, U Ye Myint and Sagaing Region Chief Minister U Tha Aye to the affected areas on 11 November. The Vice-President together with Lt-Gen Myint Soe of the Commander-in-Chief (Army)’s Office traveled to Thabeikkyin to assess the situation and offer condolences to those affected. The Humanitarian Coordinator is in contact with Government officials and offered his condolence, and support of the humanitarian community. VI.
