He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education at Troy University. After graduation, David continued his education at Troy where he obtained his Master’s Degree in the Science of Education. David has composed and arranged music for concert bands jazz bands, and marching bands around the southeast and is a multi-award winning writer for his music on JW Pepper. In addition to his composing and arranging, David enjoys performing live as a jazz pianist. David currently teaches at Foley High School in Foley, Alabama. About Champion Fanfare This selection is an exciting opener to any beginner band concert! Champion’s Fanfare utilizes doubling among brass and woodwind sections to provide ease of teaching while providing students with “backup” to build up confidence. The use of light percussion parts allows for stellar performance with as few as three players! It is a must have for any program wishing to grasp the audience’s attention at the start of their concert. Performance Notes The first fourteen measure needs to be an explosion of energy. The melody is first introduced in the Clarinet, Tenor Sax, and Horn; rehearse for balance and blend within those instruments. The development section is a change of pace. It allows for woodwind section features and legato expression. As the melody is restated later, the low brass has a new rhythmic figure to create new ideas behind the original melody. Bring out the accents, in a tasteful manner, in the percussion feature. The introduction is restated after the percussion section. It is the introduction with a slightly different twist, “concert G≤!” Make sure the long tones don’t overpower the last statement of the theme as you bring your concert opener to a close.
