Fall 2007 Collection Aláxi/a-lá-xe/: fr. Greek 1: change 2: to change Agora (ô gorá) is the Greek word for “marketplace.” The Fall 2007 Aláxi interior collection pays homage to Arts and Crafts design principles. As in our spring collection, Gytonia, the craftsmen design principles of good lines and broad effects in color and mass provide a comfortable, classic elegance that is the hallmark of Aláxi. The Arts and Crafts Movement sought to revive the ideal of craftsmanship at a time when mass production and mechanization were taking hold. The movement’s leaders insisted that the maker’s hand be evident in all work and that the elements of nature be in evidence throughout. Stylistically rendered floral and fauna patterns and abstracted natural forms reflect back to soft colors, organic structure, and welcoming texture. Agora patterns correlate and coordinate among themselves, and with many other Aláxi fabrics. The Gytonia and Agora collections were designed as a whole so that the juxtaposition of flat, texture, luster, and matte surfaces enhance all the designs that make up the group. Agora expresses the Aláxi focus to showcase natural materials in classic elements through relaxed interpretations in fabric. The collection lends itself to soft, inviting upholstered forms and surfaces in order to create a warm, gracious ambience. In Modern Greek, Aláxi means change, a word that perfectly defines the vibrant approach of this dynamic selection of decorative fabrics.
