Annual Report 2007 PRESIDENT’S REPORT –2007 It is with much pleasure that I present the Annual Report and Financial Statements of the East Malvern Junior Football Club Inc. for the 2007 season. 2007 IN REVIEW – DROUGHT & FLOODING RAINS The planning for the 2007 season commenced back in October 2006. The new Committee was very active in preparing for a number of exciting initiatives that would further enhance the hard great work of the 2006 Committee. In October 2006 the Committee set a number of key objectives for 2007. • Achieve AFL Victoria Quality Club Level Certification • Appoint a Football Operations Manager • Consolidate Club Operations Manual • Ground rationalisation with City of Stonnington • Club Apparel • Web site development • Support WJFA restructure & new WJFA President • Coaching development programmes • Team Manager mentoring programme • Registration day and recruitment strategies • Structured pre-season training • Four U9 teams • Three U10 teams • Colts team • Interstate match vs Mosman Swans The drought and imposition of Level 3A water restrictions by State Govt. & Stonnington Council impacted severely on our pre season and ultimately delayed the footy season by 4 weeks kicking off on 29th April. Also impacted was our ability to train on Friday nights with Council moving it to Wednesday & Thursday nights and banning all play on Darling Oval for 2007. Luckily thanks to the hard work by Marc Gauci in the off season we had secured Stanley Grose Oval on Sundays for the first time allowing us to play U9 & U10’s from 9.00am and sharing the Sheridan Pavilion facilities with the Dog Club. This was major concession by Council and proved to be a huge win at the start of the season. It is worth noting a few season highlights: • A record 429 player registrations. • Four Under 9 teams - The Blues, Whites & Reds & Blacks • The Colts team backed up from 2006 to be coached by Peter Harley • Our first U18 Girls team fielded in the AFL Victoria S.E. Youth Girls U18 competition coached David Quinn. • Marshall White & East Malvern Bendigo Bank as our major club sponsors in 2007 • Marshall White Jumper Presentation Night held on Friday 13th April. • Bouncing Racism Out of Sport Program (BROOS) Forum held in May. • AFL Victoria Silver Quality Club Accreditation and Quality Club of the Month award & $500 voucher. • The unfurling of our four 2006 premiership flags in Round 1 for the U11 Blues, U12 Blues, U12 Whites & U14's • The U9 Bloods vs Mosman Swans “Two Cities Challenge Shield” won by the Bloods in Sydney. • The U18 Girls vs Eaglehawk U18 Girls challenge match on Dunlop Oval followed by a BBQ and tickets to the MCG to watch Essendon & Richmond (thanks to AFL Victoria for free tickets) • 38 Knights were selected for Inter league representation in U10 – U15 & U18G. • Malvern Sport & Physio Centre attended every home match at Lucas Oval. • David Parkin Coaching Forum organised by Paul McDermott and Lewis Bearman. • John Gilbert voted AFCA Junior Coach of the Year for the Oakleigh Region. • Four premiership flags – U11 W & U13 B WJFA Division 1 & U11 B & U13 W WJFA Division 2 premiers. • Club Selection policy for U9 –U11 was introduced in the pre season for the first time with outstanding success as reported by the U9 White in their annual report. Whilst many of the boys had a number of mates in their team from the previous season or from the same school, several found themselves in a team where they had the opportunity to make many new friends. It didn’t take long for the Mighty Whites to form a very close-knit group, culminating in many of the boy’s East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2007 friendships blossoming outside the club. This is a direct reflection of East Malvern’s team selection policy which encourages meeting and making new friends. To compliment this and engender greater confidence in all the boys, strict adoption of our rotation policy in each and every game ensured all players had the opportunity to compete in all areas of the ground throughout the course of a match ie defence, forward and midfield – and a quarter on the bench to boot! At our first formal training session, all players were teamed up with a buddy of a different age - also being from another school and who they hadn’t met before. This was to ensure all players were made to feel welcome and an important part of the playing group. We wanted to ensure not a single child could feel alone regardless of their skills. EMJFC COMMITTEE A committee should represent a broad cross section of members and reflect the ideals and aspirations of its members. Since 2005 the EMJFC Committee has turned over all positions with new members being appointed to the Executive positions as well. This is a healthy position for the club to be in and I am proud to say that the 2007 Committee was faced with so many challenges not foreseen before, and by end the year came through with flying colours and the endorsement from most members. The 2007 Committee contributed tirelessly to the management of the club throughout the year to make the 2007 season the best the club has ever had, both on and off the field. I would personally like to thank everyone on the Committee for their hard work, enthusiasm and devotion to the various tasks they have performed. Being a committee member is often a thankless task and much is done behind the scenes without notice and fanfare. I would like to thank Simon Heath as my Vice President for his contributions. A number of Committee fulfilled new roles in 2007. Marc Gauci was appointed Club Secretary, James Deighton Registrar, Rob Andriske Treasurer, Paul McDermott Football Operations Manager, Anthony Greig Communications and Chris Kimberley Sponsorship. The grievances Committee was chaired by Simon Heath with support form Dale Smith and Pod Wilson, Sue Mason continued on as Club Social Manager, Lyn Gray was our WJFA delegate. Pod Wilson also took on the role of Quality & Risk Management, Dale Smith continued as Web Site Gatekeeper and John Gilbert was our go to man, our special projects expert writing more white papers then ever before. There are a number of Committee members who will retire this year who have devoted much time and energy to the Club. Pod Wilson has served on the Grievances Sub Committee over the last 2 years and took on the role Quality & Risk Manager for the Club. Pod assisted me in obtaining AFL Victoria Club Quality Bronze & Silver accreditation. Sue Mason has been our Club Social Manager for 2006 & 2007. Sue has organised social functions, raffles, bookings, pie nights, team dinners, the Knight of Nights & the 20th Anniversary celebrations without fuss and fanfare and will be greatly missed next year. The retirement of committee members opens up opportunities for new members and I urge all parents (in particular, parents of players in the lower age groups) to join the EMJFC Committee. I know you will find it a rewarding experience. KNIGHTS NEWS Knights News continued to improve throughout the season thanks to Anthony Greig and his team of reporters.
