Matsutake Collection Authorization Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, Umpqua, and Willamette National Forests Under the authority of the Forest Supervisor, this document grants the collection, transport and sale of matsutake mushrooms from Oregon Forests including the Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, Umpqua and, and Willamette. This interim change to the matsutake permitting process is a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and an effort to maximize social distancing measures to the extent possible. The Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, Umpqua, and Willamette Forests reserve the right to revoke this authorization for noncompliance with its terms and conditions or when revocation is in the public’s interest. Any violations of these conditions may invalidate the authorization and may result in legal action including criminal violations (36 CFR 261.10(L)) and civil damage. A digital or hard copy version of the appropriate harvesting area map (i.e., the map covering the area where the matsutakes are harvested). Matsutake mushrooms. A Matsutake Collection Authorization to collect Matsutakes for commercial purposes must be obtained for the picking of any Matsutake mushroom on National Forests that are harvested for resale. Harvester must be 18 years or older to obtain a permit. MATSUTAKE MUSHROOMS ** The 2020 Matsutake Season is from September 8, 2020 through November 8, 2020. Mushroom species other than Matsutake may be harvested with a valid Matsutake Collection Authorization during the season dates listed above. OTHER: All tools for matsutake harvest will not exceed 1” (one inch) wide and 18” (eighteen inches) long; raking or other ground disturbance is prohibited. Everyone must have a valid permit (be 18 years or older) and have a harvest area map in their possession to gather, transport or sell mushrooms gathered on participating National Forests. A harvest area map is not required on the Fremont half (or the East half) of the Fremont-Winema National Forest. Harvesters on the Deschutes National Forest that choose to camp are required to camp at the Industrial Mushroom Camp. Camping capacity and services may be limited. Contact the Crescent Ranger District for further information. Commercial mushroom picking is not allowed in Crater Lake National Park, Newberry National Volcanic Monument, H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, Davis Late Successional Reserve, Research Natural Areas, Wilderness Areas, Developed Recreation Areas and other designated non-harvest areas. On the Umpqua and Willamette National Forest, three additional regulations apply: 1) at least one-third of the mushroom caps on the collection area (of the same species as being collected) should be left intact to release spores (FW-337); 2) no harvest of truffles is allowed, 3) no commercial collection of mushrooms will be allowed in Late Successional Reserves; and on both the Umpqua and Willamette N.F’s. no harvest within riparian areas (any stream [Class 1 thru 4], ponds or wet areas). Motorized travel for the purpose of mushroom collection must comply with roads depicted as open on the respective mushroom maps. Mushroom Buyers: People wishing to operate buying stations on National Forest Land must obtain a permit.
