Miranda Magpies 2019/20 Yearbook We are greatly indebted to our sponsors and thank them for their continued support throughout the 2019/20 season. In turn, we ask our club members to support each of them. Equipment Officer Shane Murray Clothing Officer Gerard Burgess We are very grateful to Grill’d Miranda for providing our player of the match awards. President’s and Secretary’s Report The 2019/20 season was a complicated one by anyone’s standards. Heatwaves, bushfires and torrential rain led to cancelled training sessions and entire matches, but we just managed to scrape in finals games literally days before the COVID shutdown, so I suppose we can say we were lucky. With the committee now seasoned veterans of club management, having been in the gig for all of one season, I feel like we’re slowly managing to keep the ship on course with a little more consistency. But honestly, we’re probably responsible for all of 1% of the clubs success. The absolute vast majority of credit for the successful season goes to the volunteer coaches, managers, scorers, yearbook collaborators (thanks Janelle!), as well as parents and most importantly the players themselves. A positive start to the season is always a good thing, and a gain of 20 players to the club from last season was an excellent way to kick it off. Most of these new players came into the Master Blaster program, which is a fantastic introduction into the game for both young cricketers and their parents. We also saw a record number of girls join the club, as we continue to work towards the goal of having a Miranda team join the newly formed Girls’ Cricket competition in the near future. Whilst the club didn’t lift any trophies in 2020, it certainly wasn’t through lack of effort or courage. The talented 14Bs team cruised into the grand final only to struggle with extremely difficult weather conditions on the day. Whilst the Men’s B4 team fell an agonising 2 runs short in their bid for the premiership. Other Magpies teams in the 10As and 12Ds went down in some very close matches in semi-finals. Overall though, it was a season I can honestly say left myself and other members of the committee extremely proud. Individually, we had a number of representative players give up their Sundays to cricket throughout the season: Harrison Plakias, Aiden Briscoe and Aleks Taylor kept their representative runs continuing, whilst Ella Briscoe continues to scale the representative cricket heights and is a definite player to watch in the next few years as she makes a tilt for the big time. Pinnie Mitchell and Logan Burgess also made their rep cricket debuts this season and Kean Mitchell, Loxley Callender, Will Simpson and Will Lanham all joined forces to be involved in the SSJCA Junior Development Squad. With the bat, Logan Burgess and Zac Karayannis (in his first time playing under 10s cricket no less) topped the batting in their respective grades. The highest score by a junior cricketer in the club went to Logan Burgess with 78*, whilst Evan Dracopoulos, Jack Barnes, Thomas Waldock and Aleks Taylor also notched up half- centuries. Mitchell Crews in the men’s competition should also get a mention for averaging a pretty astounding 50.33 with a high score of 79. Whilst with the ball, Cameron Burgess topped the wicket takers’ ladder in the 12As, making him one of the most impactful 12 year-old bowlers across the entire Sutherland Shire. Having visited several games throughout the season and in speaking to coaches, managers and parents alike, it was extremely encouraging to see the positivity, sportsmanship, and respect that was being instilled in the players by all involved. With this in mind, I’d like to give a special shoutout to all our coaches, particularly our first time coaches James (12Ds), David (10Cs), Bill (10Es) and everyone involved in the MasterBlaster teams for doing such a fantastic job at ensuring all the players enjoyed themselves and the game was played in the right spirit. Finally, Darren Smith has possibly (there is still another little Smith sneaking around in the 12s) signed off his junior coaching career after having been with the same team for many a season. In the time I’ve been President, he’s been an absolute breeze to work with and he and his team will be sorely missed throughout the club. So, with the off-season being difficult to say the least, and whilst we’re not exactly sure what 2020/21 season will look like just yet, based on the fantastic experience 2019/20 was, we’re most definitely looking forward to the first ball being bowled at the nets this coming spring. Hope to see you all at the trials. Thanks again to all involved! Scott Taylor (President) + Pete Briscoe (Secretary) Junior Team Awards 2019/20 JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEAR - Joint Winners !!!!
