Hart is named after the RIVER HART (pictured) Fleet From the earliest recorded dwellings in Fleet of a mill and two farm- houses, Fleet has steadily grown over time. A south western train ser- vice was built to run through Fleet in 1840, and people came to fleet to visit the pond during to winter to ice skate. Farnborough Farnborough was founded in Saxon times and is mentioned in the Do- mesday Book of 1086. The name is formed from Ferneberga which means "fern hill". The town is probably best known for its association with aviation—and the world wide known Farnborough Airshow. Aldershot It was created by the army for a training ground in the 1850’s. As its popularity grew, it eventually became a town—as well as an army base. Odiham It was originally a market town. It is now home to the RAF base, and has one of the biggest town centers. Yateley Yateley hall in the town dates from the 13th century, but the town itself was mentioned in the doomsday book in 1086. There is Fleet Pond Local nature reserve, which is Hampshire’s largest freshwater lake. The reserve includes reed beds, marshes, heath land and woodland, as well as a wide variety of wildlife. The entire area of the reserve is 141 acres, and 118 acres of it is designated as Site of Special Scien- tific Interest. As well as it being a wonderful nature reserve, it is also a historic site. It is believed that in the times of the Nor- man Conquest the North parts of Fleet Pond were already farmed. He first records of Fleet Pond were in 1324 when “the great fishery (of) Fleet Ponds” is referred to in the Rolls of Ac- count of Crondall Manor. There are few later medieval refer- ences to Fleet Pond, but in 1491 are new arrangement was in- vestigated. The Prior at Winchester began to lease Fleet Ponds. During World War 2 the pond was drained, to prevent Nazi war planes using it as a marker from which to navigate their way to London. It is one of Hampshire’s hidden gems, and it may be the reason why Fleet developed. This is because the railway line to Fleet was built because many people, mainly living in London, came down to Fleet to skate on Fleet Pond when it froze in the winter. Elvetham Heath nature Reserve is also a popular nature re- serve. The reserve is 48 acres in size, and is a restoration pro- ject. The characteristic heathland plants such as the heather and the gorse are regenerating naturally. The reserve breed rare cattle , and they graze on the reserve during the warmer summer months when it is dry. Leisure and facilities Hart and Rushmoor have many great facilities.
