ROWING AND SCULLING NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2018 ON TO THE RACES It was a remarkable season for the women’s varsity 8. They did not lose a race until their NIRC final where they earned a silver medal behind Bates. Their race time of 6:27 was the second fastest ever recorded from a stake-boat for an Ithaca women’s crew. The fastest, from 1994, was on the Cayuga Inlet. The second-place finish represents the V8’s ninth medal and fourth silver at the season ending regatta since 1993. Their regular races were 14-0 in their favor along with championships in the Liberty League and the NYS Regatta. They finished with a 17th trip to the NCAA Championship where they finished second again. The second varsity 8 went with them, and together the squad returned with the fourth- place NCAA team trophy! Overall, the women’s squad completed another stellar season with a hatful of victories and medals. (New York). 2 ROWING AND SCULLING NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2018 The men’s squad had some successes particularly in the area of development. With only two seniors and two juniors on the roster, development was a significant goal. The team was larger than the last two years and should be deeper still in 2019. The varsity 8 fought their way to a 5-7 record. Not so good at first glance, but four of their races were lost by margins under two seconds. The petite final at the NIRC saw the leader win by 2.4 seconds, then 2.3 seconds separated the other five crews! It was a classic race to end a season of growth. The novice 8 showed glimpses of potential with silver medals at both the NYS regatta and the NIRC. A near identical roster should return in 2019 for continued improvement.
