Current Crossbearer Protocol Very often, you’ll be the most proficient server – so DON’T be shy about directing and/or mentoring the other servers diplomatically. (Folded hands, singing, responding, and using Worship aids and Blue books, etc) During the procession, hold the cross as straight and as high as possible. Walk with reverent pace as you lead the procession. After you reach the carpeting, count to 5 before bowing- then continue through the sacristy door. It’s important to sit in the chair closest to the back door. Please use worship aid to sing the Gloria and Psalm and blue book for the Creed. After the intercessions, go through the hallway quickly- to retrieve the chalice and bring it to the right of center on the altar- to start the Altar preparation. BOW to Father, after you back off the altar. While the torches are at the Altar, move closer to altar and be alert to retrieve the tray from the Altar as soon as possible- after it is empty. Father may be ready to “wash hands” while torches are still at the Altar. Make sure “Book” has moved closer to altar and is prepared to “wash hands”. After the tray is at credence table, proceed to the kneelers to the position closest to Ambo (so you have the best view of the altar – to ring the Sanctus Bells.) After the “Holy, Holy, Holy”, kneel and be alert- to ring the bells– as Father begins to extends his hands over the chalice (which can occur quickly). For Fr Jordan, your cue is- he will remove the pall from the chalice- just before extending his hands. (I prefer you NOT lean over touching the bells- before it’s time to ring them. PLEASE ring the bells vigorously- for a count of two.) Each Elevation includes 3 vigorous rings- with a distinct pause of silence between each ring. Again, there is no need to lean over, touching the bells while Father is consecrating each substance. The last words Father says before elevating the Sacred Body are “This will be given up for you” The last words before raising the Precious Blood are “ Do this in memory of Me” After the Sign of Peace, make sure the remaining communion bowl(s) are delivered Revised 2/13/20 1 of 2 to the Altar by the server closest to the credence table. Then, kneel- as Eucharistic ministers arrive- so all of you are kneeling before Fr says “Behold the Lamb of God”. As Father drinks from the chalice, stand up to be prepared to receive yours. After drinking from the cup, kneel to thank God, for your many gifts and blessings- for about a minute. Then, take the ciboria covers to the right side of altar but leave the chalice. Then hang back, with a torch, (sitting or kneeling) until Father BEGINS to return from communion. Bring a cruet with you and move 2 steps from Altar. Be alert for a full bow as the tabernacle closes. (The torch gathers the 2 stacked ciboria to take them to credence table.) Then, with a cruet, step on Altar to pour water over Father’s fingers in chalice (or ciborium) - to assist in its purification. When finished, gather remaining ciborium and return both the cruet and ciborium to the credence table. Then return to one step off the altar- to retrieve dressed chalice- when it is ready and return to “your” chair. After Father concludes the mass, gather your cross to lead our servers to prepare for the procession. Hold the cross high and face the altar until Father genuflects- then BOW and turn (to walk reverently) with eyes straight ahead. After the procession, remain at back of church until singing stops. When you arrive in sacristy, return the Sanctus bells to the priest sacristy and lead a short review of- “lessons to learn” and “well done”s. After a 10:15 mass, please make sure there is nothing out of place in the sanctuary- as if, no mass took place. Revised 2/13/20 2 of 2 .
