Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings), making all games worth three points. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. tHiS Week’S gameS NCHC FaCts aNd Figures • With only two weekends remaining in the regular season, the playoff Friday, Feb. 23 picture is somewhat starting to take shape. No. 1/1 St. Cloud State can *No. 9/11 Minnesota Duluth at No. 17 Western Michigan, 7:05 p.m. ET finish no worse than second and needs four points this weekend against *No. 12/12 North Dakota at Miami, 7:35 p.m. ET second-place No. 3/4 Denver to clinch the program’s second Penrose Cup, *Colorado College at No. 14/14 Omaha, 7:07 p.m. CT winning its first in the NCHC’s inaugural 2013-14 season. The Pioneers *No. 3/4 Denver at No. 1/1 St. Cloud State, 7:38 p.m. CT need a sweep of the Huskies, which they did earlier this season in Denver, TV: CBS Sports Network to move into first place and control their own destiny heading into the final weekend of the regular season. TV: FOX College Sports Pacific • Six NCHC teams are ranked in the USCHO.com Poll and five are ranked in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll this week, both of which are *Colorado College at No. 14/14 Omaha, 7:07 p.m. CT more than any other conference. With St. Cloud State returning to the top *No. 3/4 Denver at No. 1/1 St. Cloud State, 7:07 p.m. CT spot in both polls this week, there have only been eight weeks since the TV: FOX Sports North PLUS/FOX College Sports Atlantic start of the 2016-17 season that an NCHC team has not been No. 1 in the USCHO Poll. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that LaSt Week’S ReSuLtS span (SCSU, DU, UND and UMD), while only four other NCAA teams have total (Boston University, Penn State, Notre Dame and Cornell). Denver junior forward Troy Terry was stellar in PyeongChang, *at No. 13/13 Omaha 6, No. 9/10 North Dakota 3 leading Team USA with five assists in five games, while North Dakota *at No. 11/12 Minnesota Duluth 4, Miami 0 sophomore forward Ludvig Hoff played the final three games for his native *No. 2/3 Denver 5, at Colorado College 1 Norway, helping them earn their first Olympic win since 1994. SCSU junior defenseman Will Borgen did not dress for Team USA during the Olympics. Saturday, Feb. 17 • After logging back-to-back shutouts last weekend, UMD sophomore *No. 3/2 St. Cloud State 4, at No. 15/15 Western Michigan 2 Hunter Shepard tied the NCHC and UMD single-season record with five *No. 9/10 North Dakota 3, at No. 13/13 Omaha 0 whitewashes. He is the second NCHC netminder to record five shutouts *at No. 11/12 Minnesota Duluth 3, Miami 0 this year, joining Denver senior Tanner Jaillet. The duo is tied for third *Colorado College 1, at No. 2/3 Denver 0 nationally with their five clean sheets this year. Jaillet and Shepard join six previous NCHC netminders in logging five shutouts in a season, while *National Collegiate Hockey Conference game Shepard marks the third straight season a Bulldogs netminder had five shutouts: Denver’s Sam Brittain (2013-14), Miami’s Jay Williams (2014-15), Upcoming Games on NCHC.tv UND’s Cam Johnson, UMD’s Kasimir Kaskisuo and SCSU’s Charlie Lindgren (2015-16), and UMD’s Hunter Miska (2016-17). Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24 • Four of the top eight scoring offenses in the country hail from the NCHC, No. 9/11 Minnesota Duluth at No. 17 Western Michigan, 7:05/7:05 p.m. ET led by SCSU’s 3.90 goals per game average, which is second in the NCAA. No. 12/12 North Dakota at Miami, 7:35/7:05 p.m. ET Omaha is third in the NCAA (3.57 gpg), while Western Michigan is fifth Colorado College at No. 14/14 Omaha, 7:07/7:07 p.m. CT (3.50 gpg) and Denver is eighth (3.37 gpg). The Pioneers also rank third nationally in goals against per game, allowing only 2.07 per game.
