Weather Watch and Warning Explanations

SOUTH LYON FIRE DEPARTMENT Severe Weather Watches and Warnings As Severe Weather Season approaches, here is a handy reminder about what different weather watches and warnings mean, and what you should do when one is issued for our area: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means severe thunderstorms are possible in and around the watch area. Use caution when outdoors, and keep an eye on the sky. Make sure your NOAA Weather Radio is on, and enable Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on your mobile phone, if available. A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornado-producing thunderstorms in and around the watch area. A tornado watch provides you with time to prepare in case weather conditions rapidly deteriorate. Make sure your NOAA Weather Radio is on, and enable Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on your mobile phone, if available. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means thunderstorms with winds in excess of 58 mph and/or hail larger than 1 inch in diameter are occurring in your immediate area. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are no longer issued for entire counties, and are instead issued for small, precise areas. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued for our area, take shelter immediately. Severe thunderstorms can and do produce tornadoes. Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio for updates on the situation, including all-clears. A Tornado Warning means a tornado is imminent or already on the ground in your immediate area, indicated by Doppler radar and/or trained weather spotters. THIS IS A LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION. Tornado Warnings are no longer issued for entire counties, and are instead issued for small, precise areas. If a Tornado Warning is issued for our area, immediately take shelter under sturdy furniture in a basement, designated shelter area, or small interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building. Mobile homes are not safe during a tornado— Leave mobile homes immediately and seek a sturdy building. Once sheltered, protect your head and neck. Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio for updates on the situation, including all-clears.
