!"#$%&'(%)#*+,- %.#/- .(.(## Compiled By: [email protected] Brought to you by: The Post Apocalyptic Forge 05/28/04 The following movie list is NOT strictly post apocalyptic. Some apocalyptic events are local or regional and not world wide, some movies/shows have merely a post apocalyptic ‘feel’. Also included are Animated Movies, Animated Series, TV movies and TV Series. Please contact me if you see information you know to be in error or that you wish to add. Genre Notes: PA – Post Apocalyptic in the strictest sense PA regional – for a small region, the world has ended as they know it PA historical – Post Apocalyptic once upon a time, but now society is rebuilding PA feel – NOT a Post Apocalyptic movie/show, but has that roasted PA smell and feel PA fanciful – while strictly speaking is PA, it has either strange elements to its story or is intended as satire or humor and has little to do with traditional PA themes. PA adult – adult themes and images not suited for the kiddies. PA ? – I haven’t seen it, and can’t tell from it’s description how to sort this one, so your guess is as good as mine. Please do let me know for sure. Deliberate Omissions: These are ‘marginal’ movies I felt just didn’t quite cut the mustard, either in feel or in more substantive ways, like plot direction. You are more than welcome to harbor your own standards of ‘acceptable’ material, as I know my decisions are arbitrary Night of the Living Dead - The story follows a small group of survivors barricaded in a home for one night. The civil authorities show up the following morning. There is no general breakdown of society and it only affects a very small regional area. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes – simply put, absolutely nothing PA about this movie, except it sets the background for the other Planet of the Apes movies and series. Escape from the Planet of the Apes – Set in contemporary, but alternate timeline, nothing to do with PA, but it does set some more of the background for the other Planet of the Apes movies and series. When Worlds Collide – deals with the apocalyptic events, not the ‘after effects’. There is a book After Worlds Collide that is the direct sequel and is quite an interesting read. Resident Evil – One giant underground facility gone bad does not seem ‘apocalyptic’ enough for me. It is more thriller/horror genre than anything else. PA elements too few. The PA Related Movies List ======================================================= 12 Monkeys Category : Drama/PA Starring : Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt Director : Terry Gilliam Year : 1996 Description Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film La Jetée (which is included on the DVD Short 2: Dreams), 12 Monkeys combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam. The story opens in the wintry wasteland of the year 2035, where a virulent plague has forced humans to live in a squalid, oppressively regimented underground. Bruce Willis plays a societal outcast who is given the opportunity to erase his criminal record by "volunteering" to time-travel into the past to obtain a pure sample of the deadly virus that will help future scientists to develop a cure. But in bouncing from 1918 to the early and mid-1990s, he undergoes an ordeal that forces him to question his own perceptions of reality. Caught between the dangers of the past and the devastation of the future, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) who is initially convinced he's insane, and a wacky mental patient (Brad Pitt in a twitchy Oscar-nominated role) with links to a radical group that may have unleashed the deadly virus. Equal parts mystery, tragedy, psychological thriller, and apocalyptic drama, 12 Monkeys ranks as one of the best science fiction films of the '90s, boosted by Gilliam's visual ingenuity and one of the finest performances of Willis's career. 28 Days Later Category : Sci-Fi / Horror/PA regional Starring : Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Director : Danny Boyle Year : 2002 Description A powerful virus escapes from a British research facility. Transmitted in a drop of blood and devastating within seconds, the virus locks those infected into a permanent state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the country is overwhelmed and a handful of survivors begin their attempts to salvage a future, little realizing that the deadly virus is not the only thing that threatens them. 2020 Texas Gladiators Category : Action/PA Starring : Harrison Muller, Al Cliver Director : Kevin Mancusco Year : 1982 Description The year is 2020 and the setting is post-nuclear holocaust Texas. It's a dusty, nasty world now as can be seen in the opening scenes when a gang of outlaws rape and murder innocent nuns at a mission. They then crucify the priest. Their debauched reveling is interrupted by roving rangers who engage the villains in a blood-soaked, bone crunching fight. The rangers manage to save a terrified young woman from the melee, and the heroic leader and she fall in love and head for the peaceful land she describes to him. Years pass. The hero and the girl are married and she is pregnant. Trouble erupts when a megalomaniacal Neo-Nazi dictator and his cruel minions attack the heavily fortified refinery and begin trying to convert the hapless workers to his insane idea of the New Order. A Boy and His Dog Category : Black Comedy/PA Starring : Don Johnson, Jason Robards Director : L.Q. Jones Year : 1975 Description Closely adapted from the acclaimed novella by Harlan Ellison, this postapocalyptic black comedy has emerged as a cult favorite since its release in 1975, when Don Johnson was a relative unknown and still years away from TV stardom on Miami Vice. Here Johnson plays a young, libidinous loner named Vic who roams the postnuclear wasteland with his loyal dog, Blood, a remarkable hound with keen intelligence and the ability to telepathically communicate with his less-intelligent master. It's survival of the fittest, so food and sex are Vic's highest priorities, and he gets plenty of both when recruited into a mysterious underground society in desperate need of young fertile males. While Blood must fend for himself on the unfriendly surface, Vic realizes that he's an exploited prisoner and must escape to return to the canine friend he left behind. Thanks in large part to the sly wit of Blood (whose sarcastic voice is splendidly provided by Tim McIntire), this clever and disturbing film readily earns its lasting reputation as a low-budget classic, and features a funny yet chilling supporting role for Jason Robards Jr. The DVD includes a full-length commentary by director L.Q. Jones, cinematographer John Morrill, and film critic Charles Champlin. After the Fall of New York Category : Action/PA Starring : Valentine Monnier, Michael Sopkiw, Edmund Purdom Director : Martin Dolman Year : 1983 Description After a nuclear war, society breaks down into two groups, the evil Euraks and the rebel Federation. A mercenary named Parsifal is hired by the Federation to infiltrate New York City, which is controlled by the Euraks, to rescue the only fertile woman left on Earth. Andromeda Category: TV Series/Space Genre/PA historical Starring: Kevin Sorbo Director: Jorge Montesi Year: 2000 Description The Glorious Commonwealth: More than 3000 years ago, aliens from a planet called Tarn Vedra in the Andromeda galaxy invented a way to travel across the stars almost instantaneously. They called it Slipstream, and they used it to build a vast commonwealth of planets across six galaxies. When Earth was ready, we were welcomed into it. It was a vast, diverse group of cultures working together in peace, striving to spread civilization across the Universe. Unfortunately, some factions came to disagree with the Commonwealth's methods. The Fall: The Nietzscheans - a group of genetically engineered humans who follow a strict interpretation of Nietzsche - felt that the Commonwealth was weak because it made treaties with its greatest enemies - the Magog. So they formed a rebellion and attacked the Commonwealth of which they were a part. The result was a civil war that plunged the Universe into a new Dark Age. One of the first casualties of that war was a Glorious Heritage Class starship called the Andromeda Ascendant. Most of her crew abandoned ship, but her captain - Dylan Hunt - remained on board as the ship fell dangerously close to a black hole. The Long Night: Three hundred years of darkness passed. The Commonwealth was gone. Interstellar communication became undependable. Slipstream routes fell into disuse. Some still traveled the stars, but the journey was full of piracy, unmarked dangers and people fighting for their lives. Technology stopped developing and even reverted in some ways. A few local governments held together, but most of them were brutal and fascist. The remnants of the old Commonwealth decayed. Andromeda Rescued: A salvage vessel called the Eureka Maru then found the Andromeda Ascendant and pulled her free. When they boarded the High Guard relic, they found that Dylan Hunt had survived - the whole ship had been caught in severe time dilatation. From Dylan's perspective, only a few moments had passed since his crew escaped. But outside the black hole, darkness had fallen across his beloved Commonwealth. Time to Rebuild: Dylan once protected civilization, he now felt an obligation to rebuild what had been lost. As someone who knew what it was like to live in a Universe that was for the most part safe and at peace, he felt he and his ship could bring back the Commonwealth. He recruited the crew of the Eureka Maru, and ever since they have been searching the galaxies for worlds who are willing to join the New Commonwealth.
