THE TUESDAY CONCERT SERIES THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY Since Epiphany was founded in 1842, music has played a vital at Metro Center role in the life of the parish. Today, Epiphany has two fine musical instruments which are frequently used in programs and worship. The Steinway D concert grand piano was a gift to the church in 1984, in memory of parishioner and vestry member Paul Shinkman. The 64-rank, 3,467-pipe Æolian- Skinner pipe organ was installed in 1968 and has recently been restored by the Di Gennaro-Hart Co. It was originally given in memory of Adolf Torovsky, Epiphany’s organist and choirmaster for nearly fifty years. HE PIPHANY HOIR T E C The Church of the Epiphany has long been known for the Rebecca Kellerman Petretta, soprano excellence of its choral and organ music and we are currently looking to increase the choir’s membership. The choir is the Charles Humphries, counter-tenor church’s primary choral ensemble and consists of professional section leaders and volunteers. Singing on Kontrabande Baroque Ensemble Sunday mornings each week (September to May) at the 11:00am Eucharist (10:00am rehearsal), a weekly rehearsal is Pierre Joubert, violin held every Thursday evening 7:15-9:15pm at the church. Amen. Hailed by the Washington Post as a soprano with “grace and elegance”, Rebecca Kellerman Petretta is fast becoming one of the most exciting prospects in Early music. Throughout the Washington DC area, Petretta sings with groups such as The Washington Bach Consort, The Bach Sinfonia, Opera Lafayette and The National Gallery Vocal Ensemble as well as Three Notch’d Road as a soloist and consort member. Most recently her solo appearances have included programs with the Bach Collegium San Diego featuring the music of Handel, Purcell, Bach and Monteverdi, and a program of Handel opera arias and cantatas at the Church of the Epiphany in Washington, DC and in recital this season programs of Purcell, Monteverdi and Vivaldi have been heard. Her European career has grown in recent times taking her to countries such as England, France, Italy, Austria, The Czech Republic and Germany and highlights of these engagements included concerts with members of Fretwork, The English Cornet and Sackbut Ensemble and Dame Emma Kirkby. Countertenor Charles Humphries’ vocal career began in the United Kingdom as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral and since those days music has taken him to all parts of the world. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, he was honored with an Associateship of Royal Academy of Music. Known for his intelligent interpretations of baroque and renaissance music, he has been one of the most sought after counter tenors worldwide for the past twenty-five years. Charles now resides in the American capital where his career continues to flourish. His operatic roles have included Delfa, Giasone (Cavalli) at the Megaron in Athens, the title role in Pompeo Magno (Cavalli) at the Varazdin Festival of Baroque Music in Croatia, Lichas Hercules at the Hans-Otto Theater in Potsdam, the title role in Lucio Silla at the Händel Festival in Karlsruhe, the title role in Tamerlano for the Britten-Pears School and The Sorceress for The King’s Consort. Highlights of the 2014 season showcase Mr Humphries in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater (California, Washington DC), the Lenten cantatas of J.S. Bach for the University of San Diego music series “Angelus”, and making his debut at the Berkeley Early music festival in a programme of Purcell in early June and late summer of 2014. His solo Bach cantata recording will be released on the Naxos label.
