I discovered we both had a common interest "Motorsport" which led to an enduring friendship. I talked him into joining PIARC (The Phillip Island Auto Racing Club) in 1981 And so started his relationship with the club He became a PIARC person through and through He was enthusiastic about motorsport and competed in Motorkhanas, sprints and officialed at Rallies and the F1 GP. He had an RX3 Mazda and I rallied an RX2 and we both loved rotaries. Lots in common In 1987 he was named the Winston Maguire Clubman of the year for his work and commitment to the club. An award he thoroughly deserved He stopped competing in events after he came off at Turn 2 Phillip Island and hit the wall requiring repairs to both Ash and the Car. Subsequently he took on the job of editor of the club magazine “PIARC Notes” and held that job for many years until he had to retire due to his illness. Centreline Suspension Ash developed a close relationship with Chris and Glenn at Centreline suspension and pit crewed for them during a time when they were regularly competing in State and Winton championships (Which they won many times) and Island magic. They also ran at Bathurst and many other circuits This was a great time when both Ash and Sandra who spent many weekends at different events. Their help contributed to the teams numerous achievements. He will be forever remembered by the friends he made within the team and the sport. On a personal basis Ash, Sandra, Owen, Helen and Myself became best of friends. We ate many times at Ash’s favourite restaurant, Golden Terrace Turkish, a family restaurant were we became friends with the owners watched their children grow up and celebrated many special occasions together. We didn’t actually need any special occasion, just lets go out for dinner and Ash would nominate Turkish! He enjoyed a good meal at a restaurant, good music and his dogs Jazzy and Bella ( bred by Helen) Ash was always enthusiastic, nothing was ever a problem, he was cheerful, fun to be with and loved motorsport. He will be sadly missed Warren 4 access to motor sport President's Column Warren Reid It has been quite some time since the last Unfortunately we have recently seen the magazine and the club committee has been cancelation of both the MOTOGP and the working hard to ensure that the PIARC returns Formula 1 GP to its full schedule of events for 2021. Whilst the name implies that you “climb a hill” there is a fair amount of up and down and twists and turns involved in the run. Classes cover log book and non book cars and it’s a great way to challenge yourself without having to race with anyone else on the circuit at the same time. Seventy-one entries competed in their classes and collecting points for the Victorian Hill Climb Championship, which runs over seven rounds; subject to Covid restrictions. After all the competitors had enjoyed multiple runs for the day we packed up and headed home and look forward to developing our plan for next year.
