The Waterbury Connecticut

The Waterbury Connecticut Magical music of Andrew Lloyd Webber Thursday, February 9, 2006 BY JOANNE GRECO ROCHMAN The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber currently playing at the Bushnell features a full 28-piece orchestra and six Broadway stars performing some of the best songs by Webber. As soon as the curtain opens and the audience sees that magnificent orchestra and a backdrop with a couple of yellow cat eyes spread across it, the audience licks its lips in anticipation of a musical feast. The show not only delivers the goods, but it never falters. It's a continuous high of Webber's magical music. Liz Callaway of Merrily We Roll Along, Miss Saigon, and other Broadway shows sings "Memory" from Cats and you sit there silently; so you don't sob out loud. One woman sitting nearby had tears streaming down her face throughout the entire number. It's that good. John Cudia of The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables brought resounding cheers of "Bravo" after he sang "The Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera. Every time Cudia stepped into the spotlight, he left the audience in awe. Because this is Webber, the vocalists don't just walk onto stage and sing. They are framed in dramatic lighting at various positions on stage. Sometimes they tower over the audience as they stand high above the orchestra. At other times, they are upstage and close to the audience. There's enough lighting to qualify the show as a lighting extravaganza. Michael K. Lee of Miss Saigon and Jesus Christ Superstar is a dynamo. His personality struts across the stage in every number, especially in "Superstar." As for Alice Ripley, who created roles on Broadway in Sunset Boulevard, she takes on the role of Eva Peron as she belts out "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from Evita. Max Von Essen who appeared in Les Misérables sang a duet with Kathy Voytko who met her husband, John Cudia, on tour with The Phantom of the Opera. Von Essen and Voytko sing "All I Ask of You" from The Phantom of the Opera. The show received a standing ovation before the final number. Once, the company sang out the finale, "Love Changes Everything" from Aspects of Love, the audience responded with thunderous applause. The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber includes numbers from Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Song & Dance, The Beautiful Game, The Woman in White, Cats, Aspects of Love, Starlight Express, Whistle Down the Wind, Sunset Boulevard, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera and Aspects of Love..
