FOREST INVENTORY AND ANALYSIS NATIONAL CORE FIELD GUIDE VOLUME II: FIELD DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURES FOR PHASE 3 PLOTS Version 2.0 Changes in the Phase 3 Indicator Field Guide Chapters from version 1.7 to version 2.0 Text was revised for clarity and conciseness throughout the field guide. Where appropriate, reorganization of individual chapters was done. All variable names were written in all uppercase letters. Units were spelled out in the text, but abbreviated in the statements of When collected, etc. Leading zeros were added where appropriate to make the Values match the Field widths. All of those changes are not documented in the following list. Section numbers are those from version 2.0 unless otherwise noted (“Old” indicates version 1.7). Changes in Tolerance and MQO were made throughout Phase 3 chapters, but the changes are not documented in this list. Ozone Bioindicator Plants (east and west) • Changed: 9.4.5 QA STATUS. Deleted code 3 not used. • Changed: 9.4.5 QA STATUS. Changed text of code 7 to match Phase 2. New text is “HOT CHECK (production plot)”, making the code consistent with Phase 2. • Changed: 9.4.6 CREW TYPE. Changed text of code 2. New text is “QA CREW (any QA member present collecting remeasurement data)”, making this code more consistent with Phase 2. • Changed: 9.4.7 OZONE SAMPLE KIND. Changed text of code 1. New text is “Initial plot establishment on the base grid or on a newly intensified grid”. • Changed: 9.4.8 Current Date. Order changed to match Phase 2. Now it is three separate variables in the order of: 9.4.8.1 YEAR, 9.4.8.2 MONTH, and 9.4.8.3 DAY. Text is the same as that in Phase 2. • Changed: 9.4.10 PLOT SIZE. Deleted codes 3 and 4. Both were “not used”. • Clarified: 9.4.11 ASPECT. Old Values was 0-360. Values was changed to be consistent with the values in the Phase 2 field guide. Values now reads: 000 No aspect, slope < 5 percent 001 1 degree 002 2 degrees . 360 360 degrees, due north • Changed: 9.5.3 GPS UNIT. When collected changed from “All plots” to “All field visited plots” • Changed: 9.5.3 GPS UNIT. Changed the codes. Modified text to match Phase 2 codes. New text for codes 3 & 4: Code 3 “Other brands capable of producing files that can be post processed” Code 4 “Other brands not capable of field-averaging or post processing” 1 • Added: 9.5.10 GPS FILENAME. Makes this section consistent with Phase 2. • Changed: 9.6.1 SPECIES. Leading zeros were added to the bioindicator plant codes. They were 3-digit codes. The leading zero makes them 4-digit codes, consistent with Phase 2 codes. Lichen Communities • Text was modified in the description of many variables to clarify when the data should be recorded on the Packets, the Plot Data Card, and the PDR. Also, some variables recorded only on the Packet, the Plot Data Card or both were listed as variables in the field guide (they were previously not listed separately). • In general, When collected, when expressed ad “All plots visited”, was changed to “All lichen plots visited”. • A new example of a lichen packet label was added (Figure 10-3). • A modified Plot Data Card was added (Figure 10-4). • Changed: Old HEX ID. Name changed to P3 HEXAGON NUMBER. (Recorded only on the Packet and the Plot Data Card.) • Changed: Old PLOT NUMBER. Name changed to FIA PLOT NUMBER. (Recorded only on the Packet and the Plot Data Card.) • Clarified: Old STATE AND COUNTY. Now listed as separate variables (10.3.4 STATE and 10.3.5 COUNTY). (Recorded only on the Packet and the Plot Data Card.) • Changed: 10.3.11 CREW TYPE. (Recorded on the Plot Data Card Only.) Values changed from: “1. Regular Field Crew, 2. QA Regional Field Crew, 3. Regional Trainers, 4. National Experts” to “1 Standard field crew, 2 QA crew (any QA crew member present collecting data)”. • Changed: 10.3.12 QA STATUS. Field width changed from “?” to “1 digit”. (Recorded only on the Plot Data Card.) • Old % COVER. This variable was separated into three variables to match the way the data are collected. The three variables are: 10.3.16 % COVER LICHEN PLOT CONIFERS; 10.3.17 % COVER LICHEN PLOT HARDWOODS; and 10.3.18 % COVER LICHEN PLOT TALL SHRUBS. 2 • Clarified: 10.3.19. MOST IMPORTANT TREE AND SHRUB SPECIES. This is the same as DOMINANT TREE/SHRUB SPECIES (w/ % COVER) on the Plot Data Card. • Clarified: 10.3.21.1 % GAP. Field width defined as “2 digits” to match codes. Values defined to match the text. • 10.3.23 FEATURES IMPORTANT FOR HIGH/LOW LICHEN DIVERSITY – Clarified text of two codes. Code 09 changed from “Presence of exceptionally good lichen substrate species (e.g., Quercus garryana, Abies spp. In west)” to “Presence of exceptionally good lichen substrate species (differs by region)”. Code 17 changed from “Most of the trees on plot were poor lichen substrate (e.g., lodgepole pine)” to “Most of the trees on plot were poor lichen substrate (differs by region)”. Soil Measurements and Sampling • Changed: Metric dimensions were changed to English dimensions. Data on the PDR will be entered in English. • Clarified: 11.6.1 PERCENT COVER OF BARE SOIL. When collected clarified from “All forested subplots” to “When any portion of the subplot contains at least one accessible forested condition class” . • Clarified: 11.6.2 PERCENT COMPACTED AREA ON THE SUBPLOT. When collected clarified from “All forested subplots” to “When any portion of the subplot contains at least one accessible forested condition class”. • Clarified: Old 11.3.3.2 TYPES OF COMPACTION. The text for this variable was modified separating the variable into four separate variables in the field guide to match the way the variables are actually collected in the PDR program. The four variables are: 11.6.3 TYPE OF COMPACTION – RUTTED TRAIL; 11.6.4 TYPE OF COMPACTION – COMPACTED TRAIL; 11.6.5 TYPE OF COMPACTION – COMPACTED AREA; 11.6.6 TYPE OF COMPACTION – OTHER. • Changed: (11.6.3, 11.6.4, 11.6.5, and 11.6.6) TYPE OF COMPACTION (all four).
