Charlie and I have been colleagues at UW for 30 years; he arrived here in 1987 as a full professor, just a year before I came as an assistant professor. I cannot remember when we first met; it may have been in the late 1990s, when Charlie was chairing the Sociology Department and I was Chair of History – but we have known each other for a long time. And like all of you, I’ve admired him for as long as I’ve known him. Charlie is a Midwesterner. He was raised in Lisbon, Ohio, a small town of fewer than 3000 people in eastern Ohio, about midway between Akron and Pittsburgh. Lisbon, for those who do not know it, is the county seat of Columbiana County, Ohio; and among its other claims to fame, Lisbon is where the modern drinking straw was invented and patented. When Charlie graduated from high school, he stayed in Ohio to attend Miami University of Ohio, from which he graduated in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. He then spent a couple of years in Malaysia, working with the Peace Corps, thus beginning a lifelong connection to Southeast Asia. When he returned to the US, he returned to the Midwest, enrolling in the Sociology PhD
