Albacon 2009 October 9 – 11, 2009 Albany, NY The Capitol Area’s Science Fiction & Fantasy Convention Guests of Honor Author Elizabeth Hand Originally from Yonkers and Pound Ridge, NY, Hand worked for a number of years at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air & Space Museum. In 1988 she moved to Maine. A visionary writer, she has a longstanding interest in outsider artists, the subjects of much of her fiction. Her recent psychological thriller Generation Loss is about an emotionally damaged proto-punk photographer, and 2004’s Mortal Love was inspired by the life and work of the schizophrenic Victorian fairy painter Richard Dadd. Hand’s novels and short stories are highly autobiographical, and draw deeply on the places she’s lived, including Yonkers, Washington, D.C., North London, and the rural coast of Maine. Artist Stephen Hickman Stephen Hickman has been illustrating science fiction and fantasy for three decades. His work is inspired by the masters of fantasy and science fiction writing — J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft, A. Merritt, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Clark Ashton Smith. Hickman’s work has earned him critical acclaim, including a World Science Fiction Convention’s Hugo Award, and 5 Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists. In 1994 he was awarded a Hugo Award from the World Science Fiction Convention for the United States Postal Service’s Space Fantasy Commemorative Booklet of stamps, the first official recognition by the government of the SF genre. Since 1976 Hickman has illustrated over 400 covers; in 1988 Hickman wrote The Lemurian Stone (Ace Books), which formed the basis for his Pharazar Mythos illustrations, and was in the 1994 edition of Spectrum. Fan D. Cameron Calkins Starting from crude AD&D character sketches in 1980, Calkins has advanced to exhibit at a whole lot of SF/F convention, and even won a few awards. He uses humor and the Greco-Roman tradition of beauty, often with a touch of erotica. Raised in upstate New York near Rochester, Calkins went to Roger Williams College for marine biology, but in the mid-1990’s became a computer geek. He owns a Ball Python, and has a fondness for a certain dragon puppet.
