WAMC Program Guide October 2015 - Volume 21 Issue 10 Here Comes The October Fund Drive! The Drive October Programming Notes Alan S. Chartock Katie Britton WAMC President and C.E.O. WAMC Programming and Outreach Director The crucial, life-giving fund drive begins Monday A candid conversation about personal finance October 5th. I don’t have to tell anyone that this is where we live. No fund drive, no station. Well, the mums and foliage are giving us that last shock of color before we enter the winter The themes are always the same: “We can’t do it doldrums and what better way to celebrate the without you” and “We’re all in this together.” As I turning of the seasons than getting out of our see it, these two assertions are truth. We are nothing homes to enjoy it. And boy, do I have an event for without each and every listener. The model is for you to come to – and the best part is that it’s everyone to “get it” and to kick in. This is a FREE! community project. If and when everyone assumes ownership, we are made whole. On Thursday, October 15th at 7PM, WAMC, in partnership with WMHT and NPR, will be hosting We do have a good time on our reaffirming fund NPR Presents: Family Matters at the University at drives. They are hard but very gratifying. We love to Albany’s recital hall. This is your chance to get the hear from each one of you. WAMC-FM broadcasts 365 days a year to eastern New York and western New England on We were recently out in Asheville, North Carolina, at 90.3 MHz. Our studios and offices are in the inauguration of the fabulous former President of the Albany, NY. Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Mary Grant. I can’t tell you how many people came up to us to tell us The WAMC transmitter is located atop Mount how important WAMC is in their lives. People tell us Greylock in Adams, MA. The WAMC-AM that they listen to our streaming on their computers or transmitter is located in Albany, NY. WAMK’s iPhones, no matter where in the world they happen to be. transmitter is located on Overlook Mountain, Woodstock, NY. All this goes to prove that if everyone listening contributed, the drive could be over in minutes. So why WAMC transmits on these frequencies: doesn’t this happen? I have always contended that WAMC, 90.3 FM, Albany, NY people actually love the WAMC fund drives. It is a time WAMC 1400 AM, Albany NY to let our hair down and talk to each other; to say WAMK, 90.9 FM, Kingston, NY whether we like the opera or hate it; to offer political WOSR, 91.7 FM, Middletown, NY opinions along with the pledges. There is energy and a WCEL, 91.9 FM, Plattsburgh, NY real time feel during the fund drive that is unique in all WCAN, 93.3 FM, Canajoharie, NY of public radio. WANC, 103.9 FM, Ticonderoga, NY WRUN-FM, Remsen-Utica, NY I’ve always found it interesting that after making WAMQ, 105.1 FM, Great Barrington, MA $100,000 a day all week, at the very end of the drive, WWES, 88.9 FM, Mt. Kisco, NY there have been times when we just can’t get the last few thousand dollars. I have always thought that’s because WANR, 88.5 FM, Brewster, NY there are people who so enjoy the drives that they don’t WANZ, 90.1, Stamford, NY want to see them end. After all, these drives are the ultimate human drama. I’ve done an awful lot of them, Translators: probably a hundred or more since we first started to W280DJ, 103.9 - Beacon, NY “Save Our Station (SOS)” in 1979. We did it then and W247BM, 97.3 - Cooperstown, NY we’ve done it ever since. In the meantime, we have been W292ES, 106.3 - Dover Plains, NY together as President Bush sent troops into Iraq under W243BZ, 96.5 - Ellenville NY very dubious pretenses. We were all together when that W271BF, 102.1 - Highland, NY guy bought a tee-shirt that proclaimed “Peace on Earth,” W246BJ 97.1 - Hudson, NY and was promptly arrested in the very mall where he W204CJ, 88.7 - Lake Placid, NY W292DX, 106.3 – Middletown, NY purchased the shirt. W215BG, 90.9 - Milford PA W299AG, 107.7 - Newburgh, NY Then there was the Mario Cuomo valedictory after he W211CE, 90.1- Oneonta, NY lost an election to George Pataki, the very same George W257BL, 99.3 - Oneonta, NY Pataki who tried to eliminate WAMC’s share of the W240CR, 95.9 - Peekskill, NY small amount of money that the state gives to every W226AC, 93.1 - Rensselaer-Troy, NY public radio station, in a thinly veiled attempt to get even W225BM, 92.9 - Scotia, NY for keeping Mario on the air after he lost the election. In W296BD, 107.1 - Warwick, NY each case, we hung together and kept the great station going. Surface mail: WAMC Box 66600 So, as we approach the October 5th fund drive let us all Albany, NY 12206-6600 remember that we are part of a very important group of people who have made a radio station and who will keep Phone: 1-800-323-9262 it open.
