A. Alves is Associate Professor and director of the American Culture Institute at the University of Lisbon. Her published work reflects her interests in inter- disciplinary approaches to American Literature and Culture. She is currently engaged in researching American Autobiography, having published articles on autobiographical works by R. W. Emerson, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Norman Maclean, Maxine Hong Kingston and Leslie Marmon Silko. She has co-authored Literatura Norte Americana (Lisbon, 1999), and co-edited several publications, among them Ceremonies and Spectacles: Performing American Culture (Amsterdam, 2000). Kathleen Ashley is Professor of English at the University of Southern Maine. Her areas of specialization cover the two different scholarly fields of Medieval Studies and American Studies (Autobiography, African-American Literature, Cultural Theory) on which she has published widely. Her publications include (ed.) Victor Turner and the Construction of Cultural Criticism (Indiana, 1990); (co-ed.) Interpreting Cultural Symbols: Saint Anne in Late Medieval Society (Georgia, 1990); (co-ed.) Autobiography and Postmodernism (Massachusetts, 1994). Teresa Cid is Assistant Professor at the Department of English Studies of the University of Lisbon. Her main subjects of research are American Literature and Culture, Modernism, Popular Culture, and Television Studies. Besides having published essays on the above-mentioned scholarly fields, she has co-authored Literatura Norte Americana (Lisbon, 1999), and co-edited several publications, among them Ceremonies and Spectacles: Performing American Culture (Amsterdam, 2000). Isabel Fernandes is Associate Professor at the Department of English Studies of the University of Lisbon. Her teaching and research interests include Literary Theory, Narratology, Gender Studies and Comparative Literature. She has published articles and essays on D. H. Lawrence, Joseph Conrad, Jane Austen, Emily Brontë and Mikhail Bakhtin. She is at present working on the contemporary novel and especially on the work of the British author A. S. Byatt. Also of interest to her is the relationship between the English novel of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the Empire. 8 Luisa Flora is Associate Professor in the Department of English Studies of Lisbon University. Her research interests include novel and short story theory, identity and gender studies, contemporary literature and comparative literature. She has published on G. Eliot, G. Egerton, J. Conrad, H. James, V. Woolf, J. Rhys, I. Murdoch, D. Lessing and the First World War Pacifists. With Richard Todd, she edited Theme parks, Rainforests and Sprouting Wastelands (Amsterdam & Atlanta, GA: Rodopi, 2001). She is also co- editor of The Crossroads of Gender and Century Endings (Lisboa: Edições Colibri and University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, 2000). Lucy Maddox is Professor of English at the University of Georgetown and the editor of American Quarterly. Her areas of specialization are American-Indian Literatures and Cultures, and American Literature. Besides numerous essays, she has published, among others, Removals: Nineteenth-century American Literature and the Politics of Indian Affairs (Oxford UP, 1991) and (ed.) Locating American Studies: the Evolution of a Discipline (Johns Hopkins UP, 1999). Teresa de Ataíde Malafaia is Assistant Professor at the Department of English Studies, Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon from which she has received her PhD degree. Her fields of specialization are Victorian Culture and Aestheticism, namely Matthew Arnold and Walter Pater. As a result of the research done in identity matters, she has been publishing on nineteenth-century essayists, both female and male, and Pre-Raphaelite Aesthetics, as well as studying the links between Victorian women and empire. She has also published on multicultural education and citizenship. She is co- editor of The Crossroads of Gender and Century Endings (Lisboa: Edições Colibri and University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, 2000). Alcinda Pinheiro de Sousa is Assistant Professor at the Department of English Studies, Lisbon University, from which she has received her PhD degree. Her areas of specialization are romanticism and modernism, namely William Blake and T. E. Hulme. In recent years, she has been researching questions of identity and publishing on gender and literary theory, and on women writers of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. She has also published on literature and science, and on literature as an educational factor. She is co-editor of The Crossroads of Gender and Century Endings (Lisboa: Edições Colibri and University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, 2000). CONTRIBUTORS 9 Sonia Torres is an Associate Professor at Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She is former President of the Brazilian Association of American Studies (ABEA) and currently Vice President of the International American Studies Association (IASA). She is the author of Nosotros in USA (Rio de Janeiro: Zahar, 2001) and edited the American Studies volume Raízes e Rumos (Rio de Janeiro: 7Letras, 2001). She is on the Editorial Board of Transit Circle, the Brazilian journal of American Studies (Rio de Janeiro: Ed. Contracapa) and a member of the Advisory Board of Comparative American Studies (London: Sage Publications). Her current research project deals with literature, culture, and political conflict. Joana Vidigal is Assistant Lecturer at the Department of English Studies of Lisbon University. She wrote her MA in English Literature (1995) on Jean Rhys’s novel. Her interests include 20th century English novel, modernist aesthetics, narratology, genre theory, romanticism, and painting vs. literature. She has published on pictorialism in romantic poetry and its echoes in later narrative and has contributed articles on literary history to Portuguese encyclopaedias. She is currently preparing a PhD dissertation on selected works by Virginia Woolf and Ivy Compton-Burnett. Jennie Wang is Associate Professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa. Her main research fields are Twentieth-century American Literature, Asian American Literature and Comparative Literature. She has published several articles on Kingston, Faulkner and others; her books include Novelistic Love in the Platonic Tradition: Fielding, Faulkner and the Postmodernists (1997) and The Iron Curtain of Language: Maxine Hong Kingston and American Orientalism (forthcoming). Introduction In its wide diversity, the selection of essays collected here illustrates the work done by eleven researchers from English Departments in the United States, in Brazil and at Lisbon University. The essays came together under the auspices of the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES) as the result of work done by seven of its researchers and by foreign colleagues who were invited to contribute to the volume due to their previous collaboration in joint research. Through very different approaches these essays explore questions of gender, literary theory and feminine identity in the work of English and American writers, revisiting some of the problems addressed in a former international collection published in 2000 by Cadernos de Anglística and at an International Conference entitled Identity Matters. * The first four essays in this volume all focus on issues of gender
