In this unique conversation we are offered insights into his creations that have for decades run unmistakably against the main currents of theatre, art and writing in ways that inspire his audiences and peers and which have earned him numerous awards and accolades. As a designer of theatre sets and record covers, John Byrne has lent his diverse talents to The Beatles and Billy Connolly amongst others. As a playwright, he won critical acclaim for ‘Slab Boys’ and again for the six-time BAFTA award-winning television series ‘Tutti Frutti’. His work is held in major collections in Scotland and abroad, including the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the museum of Modern Art. An evening of Super8 film and spoken word from Alastair Cook’s Film-poem project, with readings from Swoon and other guests, exploring childhood nostalgia in “Abachan― to Avant-guard cinema such as “Mothlight,― a homage of Stan Brakhage’s 1963 work of the same name, among many other themes. The performance will unfold against the ominous backdrop of Summerhall’s Demonstration Room, originally functioning as the Dick Vet’s dissection theatre. Utilising the inherent acoustic properties of this space, SINK music will accompany Cook’s films with a live score improvised on the night. Throwing caution to the wind and meandering at the grace of the landscape, this collaboration hopscotches through Screen Bandita’s collection of found and previously abandoned super 8 film and slides in order to dream into existence an imagined road trip that traverses land and air, negotiates highways and byways and skitters between movement, stillness, reflection and pure abandon.  The custom-composed live score, courtesy of topsy-turvy Glasgow quartet The One Ensemble, (featuring cello, bass clarinet, guitar, percussion and vocals), incorporates traces of Eastern European folk and string-laced chamber psych, and unites thrilling playing with compositional elegance to create a bewitching, disorientating and alluring new journey. Bringing together analogue film recovered from junk shops, attics and skips, Screen Bandita carefully select celluloid memories created by image-hunters from the past, rediscovering their excursions and bringing them into the present to create a surreal and alluring new journey. Through the whirr and flicker of the projector and a symphony of sound, the event promises a road trip to lost lands, offering an experience that travels further than any regular cinema screening – destination unknown! And that’s also the title for an evening of outstanding vocal entertainment being staged to benefit the charity LUPUS UK. It’s being arranged for Sarah Heney who, in May 2010, was diagnosed with the painfully debilitating and incurable autoimmune disease, Systemic Lupus. Now just 49, she has had to give up her job as Marketing Manager at the Edinburgh Playhouse and the illness severely curtails her life. Moved by how this affects her, some of Sarah’s very talented theatre friends have decided to put on a special charity performance. The singers include Susie Dumbreck, who has appeared in Les Miserables and Oklahoma! in the West End and Charles Munro who has performed at the Royal Opera House and with Scottish Opera. Combining relentless funk rhythms with lush harmonies and fantastic pop hooks – Formed by four music students for what was, initially a one-off performance. The chemistry clear, the band continued and have been gigging rigorously since their formation, performing at top venues in Edinburgh and Glasgow. A regular on the Scottish gigging circuit, Sea Bass Kid are an Edinburgh based six-piece band sportinga unique Indie Pop sound flavoured with lashings of Reggae, Blues, Folk and Funk. Finalists of ‘Live and Unsigned’ Scotland 2009, Sea Bass Kid have built up a formidable fan base since their formation. They are the resident band at Whistle Binkies where they can be heard every week. In 2009, they also began working with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, performing on October 2010 for “Nearly Ninety― at the Barbican Centre in London, together with Takehisa Kosugi (Taj Mahal Travellers) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). Now they’re back, stripped right back to the pure skronking duo wreaking havoc across the British Isles. – Café Oto The solo project of Eric Hardiman, a new and noisy Edinburgh resident by way of Albany, New York. Zoned out drones and krautrock explorations from a stalwart of the DC hardcore scene and collaborator in Century Plants with ex-Deadline vocalist Ron Hare, Eric also runs the excellent Tape Drift Records and is a regular contributor to Foxy Digitalis. One Giant Leap is an impossible attempt to bring the whole universe into a theatre and into our understanding, using a tennis ball, a wastepaper basket and a dash of theatrical invention. Iain Johnstone’s passionate solo performance about the relationship between humanity and the heavens fills your head with facts and asks some awkward questions. Summerhall is proud to announce the launch of Britain’s largest Historical Fiction Festival with a line up of award winning and acclaimed authors. It is only right that it should be held in Edinburgh, for the city is the cradle of historical fiction, from Sir Walter Scott, Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis Stevenson, to a growing number of modern day historical novelists. A feast of Irish and Scottish Gaelic music and poetry from two giants of traditional music, Cathal McConnell (Boys of the Lough) and piper extraordinaire, Allan MacDonald of Glenuig and one of the most inventive Irish poets in Scotland today, Rody Gorman whose “intertongueings” have created great excitement among poets and translators alike and introducing some exceptional young musician stars, every one! Directed by Toni Harman & Alex Wakeford, the film tells the story of Hungarian midwife Agnes Gereb, imprisoned for supporting women during homebirths, and the subsequent European Court of Human Rights case brought by mother Anna Ternovsky. Her successful fight for the right to have a homebirth means that every woman in Europe has the legal right to decide where and how she gives birth. Featuring a Who’s Who of 40 international birth experts, academics, Human Rights lawyers, doctors and midwives, the film calls for a radical shake-up of the world’s maternity systems. Screening will be followed by a discussion with an invited panel of midwives, mothers and human rights representatives. Due to unforeseen issues, the film screening and performance scheduled for the 15th February is cancelled. The screening has been rescheduled for Wednesday 20th February.  Booked tickets are still valid for this new date, and refunds are also available from the Box Office. The Wee Rogue will be performing on the 20th. Apologies for the inconvenience the date change is out with the organisers control. The alter ego of musician Matt Hill, Umberto is a one-man band crafting horror score creep-scapes for the digital age. A true master of the horror film soundtrack aesthetic, his music is a hypnotic, all-consuming journey, reeling you into a foggy, neon-lit world of graveyards, stalkers, haunted houses, witches and blood-stained corpses. Evoking the unsettling progressive rock of Goblin and the sinister, dystopian synth-work of John Carpenter, his acclaimed releases have garnered considerable praise for their staggering, gothic take on italo disco and new-wave synth pop, recreating the brooding intensity of a Dario Argento soundtrack through the cyclical melodies and throbbing rhythms he shares with his closest contemporaries, Zombi and Gatekeeper.
