The Asian Indian Classical Music Society 52318 N Tally Ho Drive, South Bend, IN 46635 Indian Classical Concert East Meets West: Sitar and Cello Shubhendra Rao (Sitar) & Saskia Rao-de Haas (Cello) with Harshad Kanetkar (Tabla) on September 15th , 2013, Sunday, 7.30 PM at the Carey Auditorium , Hesburgh Library, University of Notre Dame Shubhendra Rao is ranked amongst the key soloists of India. He creates an experience for his audience that "is not aimed at titillating the senses, but to seize the soul" (The Hindu, New Delhi, 4thFeb 2000). A protégé of world-renowned Sitar maestro, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Shubhendra has established himself not only as a master of his instrument but also as a thinking musician, constantly endeavoring to carry his instrument beyond conventional boundaries. He has performed at major music festivals and concert halls like Broadway and Carnegie Hall in New York, WOMAD festival in Guernsey, UK, Sydney Opera House in Australia, National Arts Festival in South Africa, Theatre de le Ville in Paris, Edinburgh festival and Dover Lane Music Conference, in Kolkata, India. Saskia Rao-de Haas received training from Tibor de Machula (in the western classical tradition), Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia (the great flute maestro), Dr. Sumati Mutatkar and Shubhendra Rao, among others. She has performed at many concert halls and music festivals in India, the Netherlands, Scotland, Thailand and Turkey, among other countries. According to Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, “she has been taught by God … Everybody should listen to her music”. They are both popular teachers and composers and in 2008 they were commissioned by India’s premier TV station, NDTV, to compose for India’s Independence Day celebrations.
