EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 INTRODUCTION Established in September 1989, Government Arts & Commerce College, Vansda Dist. Navsari is affiliated to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat. It is also augmented by the use of co-curricular activities i.e. Saptdhara, SCOPE, BISAG, UDISHA and Sports to the extent that it becomes a bliss for both the teacher and the taught. Page 2/89 20-08-2019 12:11:26 Self Study Report of GOVERNMENT ARTS AND COMMERCE COLLEGE VANSDA To develop a healthy network in educational institutes towards excellence. 1.2 Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Challenges(SWOC) Institutional Strength More than 1000 students every year takes admission in our college Students are very much interested in cultural programmes as they live their lives traditionally so we also provide them such atmosphere and train them by various cultural programmes in our institution. Thus it is gainful to them to be practical in life. Highly educated as well as experienced, dynamic and result/career oriented young faculties as professors with strong academic credentials. Visionary and dynamic leadership of Principal of college. Enthusiastic students in all the activities done in college like NSS, Sports and other programmes. Teaching Infrastructure is available though not adequate but whatever is available used with sense and sensibility. Classrooms, library and DELL is available. Sports-ground is there where students used to play games like Kabaddi, Khokho, Volleyball etc. DELL is facilitated with 24+1=25 computers. Obviously we have made it active from its inactiveness because of lack of technical faculties as well as technical faults. Our college-students learn there English to be suitable with modern age. They learn there typing, writing application, and making CVs, sending emails, making PPTs and various English aspects. Register is also maintained of students-visitors in that lab. SCOPE is running through DELL. We enroll students for its exams held by SCOPE-Gujarat authority of KCG at Ahmedabad i.e. run by PPP mode, a kind of initiative in Gujarat for students. About 200 students have passed this exam upto now from our college’s SCOPE’s co- ordination. Curriculum for all disciplines with emphasis on good fundamentals. Lab and Library is having internet facility. Cordial and courteous relationship among teachers and students of the college. College also has begun to organize state-level seminars (we have organized one on The Mother- Language Day), internal seminar series, competitive exams held, some vocational training are provided inviting outsider faculties and unions. Some faculties have also created their own channels/mechanisms with audio-video facility for the students. Boys and girls hostels are provided by Additional Commisoner of Tribal ( Government of Gujarat ). Institutional Weakness Though we have certain weaknesses but some of them we solve it by our sense and sensibilities and some of them are not in our hands as they are handled by the government. Some of them are as follows: Staff is recruited by the government so it is changed every year. Some seats are vacant and some Page 3/89 20-08-2019 12:11:27 Self Study Report of GOVERNMENT ARTS AND COMMERCE COLLEGE VANSDA are contractual and on some emergency we invite visiting faculties. In short, regular staff is inadequate in our college. It is also transferable job so recruited faculties also try to transfer the next as they are appointed here. Limited grants for students’ sake. Being a tribal area, it is difficult to strike private or corporate partnerships for placement like facilities and collaborations. Lack of adequate diversity among the students. You will find similar looking students in our college. No auditorium due to belated governmental procedures. Due to shortage of land sports-ground is limited. Lack of sweepers and other cleanliness related staff. In ladies hostels, less seats are provided for our college’s girls students because it is not our own but run by Social-Welfare Office at Taluka (Territory) Level. Many activities have to be performed planned by the government as well as the university so sometimes it weakens the schedule of syllabus related arrangement in college. College has constituted allumni but yet not have passed through its formal procedure. Aptitude of the students for higher learning is poor. Poor Communication skill of students because of their socio-economic background in this area. Institutional Opportunity College has an opportunity to serve students with IT facilities if the government provide us fund for smart-class in each-n-every classes. If DELL is replaced by new LED Computers and software with inverters and UPS, we have a very fine opportunity to make students progressive in English i.e. modern demand today. And if so we can make our college as an exam center for SCOPE. We have a library, if more reference-books are provided; thereby we need adequate grant so that students get more opportunity to get more knowledge. Institutional Challenge Limited grant that we face here Limited educational tools i.e PCs, classrooms, ground for sports, benches, lectern, and platforms. Other furniture Staff-recruitment according to class-divisions. A number of activities that we have to perform at a time while different lectures as per college’s schedule. 1.3 CRITERIA WISE SUMMARY Curricular Aspects Regarding curricular Aspects, curricular planning and implementation, the institution ensure Page 4/89 20-08-2019 12:11:28 Self Study Report of GOVERNMENT ARTS AND COMMERCE COLLEGE VANSDA effective curriculum delivery through a well planned and documented process. It is stated that Government Arts and Commerce College, Vansda is run by the Government of Gujarat and affiliated to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University of Surat, so we balance between the two Initiatives provided by the government particularly KCG, Ahmedabad because most of the initiatives are implemented from this place in all over the Gujarat and curriculum implemented by the university. Its effective curriculum delivery is ensured in the following ways: 1. Teaching Plan is regularly maintained by faculty members and principal. 2. For the excellence of the curriculum, we use different pedagogical tools as the state-level seminar is also organized, for example, we had organized one in 2017. 3. ICT tools and techniques are used and different programs are also conducted to understand the subject and curriculum. 4. For the excellence of the curriculum provided by the University of Surat, we use BISAG facility on which different experts delivered their lectures on different subjects related to our curriculum. 5. We also invite guest lecturers for their share of learning with our students. 6. Some of our faculties also have their own educational channel on YouTube on which students see lectures’ videos repeatedly when they need. Teaching-learning and Evaluation Teaching & Learning process has been strengthened in the last few years. The regular teaching faculties are appointed through the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC). The college has adopted student- centric methods. The vibrant interaction between teachers and learners creates an academic atmosphere conducive to an enhanced scholarly pursuit. There are 7 teachers with Ph.D. qualification in 2017-18 and 9 are pursuing Ph.D. from different Universities. The average teaching experience of full-time teachers is 9 yrs. Evaluation of students performance is made as per University guidelines. Student Performance and Learning Outcomes are decided by the affiliated University. For effective teaching college is equipped with LED Touch screen projector, LED touch screen android smart TV, LCD projector, LCD TV for SANDHAN and Live TV. The Government is aware of the importance of information technology and communication system to the education sector. Therefore the government provides free Wi-Fi facility in college to all students and teachers for better learning and teaching processes. Research, Innovations and Extension This criterion basically demands information about incubation centers or such initiatives in the institution but our college is an arts and commerce college so we teach only Environmental Studies at its basic level.
