Artist Management and Music Export - A Concise Overview A Sound Diplomacy Seminar & Masterclass Saturday 6 December 2014 SAE Athens, Korai 2, Moschato 183 45, Greece 11am - 3.30pm - Seminar 4pm – 5.30pm - Masterclass About the course: The 4-5 hour seminar session will focus on topics that are current internationally but also relevant to the Greek music market and artists and will help its business growth and opportunities. The seminar will help participants familiarise themselves with several aspects of the music industry - especially from an artist manager’s perspective and is aimed at music business students and Greek music professionals alike. The seminar will be followed by an 1.5 hour-long exclusive Music Export Masterclass Session. The masterclass is aimed at Greek music industry professionals and prived more hands-on information on current music export techniques, territory-specific information and B2B contacts. Booking Agents / European Touring (1.5 hour) The session will look at the best ways to present an artist for live representation when looking outside of your domestic territory, how to appeal to your target bookers and what they will be looking for in you. We will also discuss the different ways live agents work in the major territories and the purpose of touring internationally. Furthermore we will look at taxes, visas and the different royalty collection societies that exist for you in each country - it is important for you to know this information before hitting the road so you know exactly what financial hurdles and opportunities await you when leaving for international success. There may also be a few hints and tips to take away with you... 1 Working with Music PRs (1.5 hour) - The seminar will provide a clear and direct overview of how the music PR industry works today in key territories and how to achieve maximum results. PR can be the most expensive structure to coordinate and is very ‘hit and miss’. But if one does their research and knows, most importantly, what they want out of it. Knowing your expectations is the best way to strategise a PR campaign. What is music PR? How can you use it to boost your career? At what stage in an artist’s development should you hire a PR agency? What are the differences in every country and which countries should you focus on? The checks and balances of a successful campaign. Showcase Festivals (1.5 hour) - Showcase Festivals have increased dramatically in numbers in the past years. The seminar will explain what a showcase festival is, including who is involved, how they are different from standard festivals and what they mean in terms of performing at them. We will also highlight the importance of attending showcase festivals to network, in addition to actually showcasing. We will aim to explain how they work, including explaining and going back to what export offices do and how they can be used to benefit one’s export opportunities. We will unpack the various ways networking at showcase festivals are coordinated (speed meetings, 1on1, general networking, roundtables) and what to do to prepare oneself, from having business cards to being humble and not asking anything of anyone. Music Export Masterclass (1,5hour) - The masterclass will be ‘from a Greek perspective’ and will discuss ways how local music companies and professionals can navigate in key European and overseas territories and how to grow their businesses there. The session will start off by presenting how traditional music export works (release and touring) and how you can maximise your chances in succeeding in it. Furthermore we will aim to continue the discussion that states that traditional export is not the only manner to develop oneself for international markets. Now, publishing and manipulation of copyright is equally important, which we hope this lecture will explain. Understand the basis of sync and what it means to music export. Provide more developed and specific knowledge on sub-publishing and export revenue opportunities. Participants will be provided with one unique, specific case study on secondary revenue sources in developing markets - ringback tones in India and Southeast Asia. Time Title 11am - 12.30 pm Booking Agents / European Touring 12.30am - 2pm Working with Music PRs 2pm - 3.30pm Showcase Festivals 3.30pm - 4pm Lunch Break 4pm – 5.30pm Music Export Masterclass 2 BIOGRAPHIES Dr Shain Shapiro Originally from Toronto, Canada, Dr Shain Shapiro has worked in the music industry for over fifteen years, including (before founding Sound Diplomacy) 3.5 years as the UK and European Representative of the Canadian Independent Music Association. In this role, he helped produce over 100 showcases across Europe, working with 500 bands in the process. Before that, he was the UK Press Manager for One Little Indian and FatCat Records and an internationally published music journalist, working for Timeout, VICE and others. He holds a PhD from Birkbeck, University of London, titled ‘The History of Popular Music Funding in Canada’. He has designed a course for Berklee College of Music, advised on the Momentum Music Fund, guest lectures at four universities in three countries and has spoken at MIDEM, SXSW, WOMEX, Liverpool Soundcity, Eurosonic, Canadian Music Week and over 30 other festivals and conferences. He was awarded The Hospital Club and British Council’s h100 award in 2013, making him one of the top Creatives in Britain. He was nominated in the Creative Entrepreneur Category. Vasilis Panagiotopoulos Vasilis has worked in Communications and PR at various cultural and political organisations including the European Parliament, Music Export Denmark/Spot Festival and the Society of Audiovisual Authors in Brussels. He has worked for record labels such as Denmark’s Fake Diamond and Greece’s Inner Ear Records. He also manages the Icelandic ethereal ensemble Rökkurró. His journalistic work has appeared in various music media such as The Line of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, CMU Daily, Drowned In Sound and The 405. Vas is fluent in English, German, French, Danish and Greek. About Sound Diplomacy Sound Diplomacy was founded in February 2013 by Canadian-born, London-based music industry consultant Shain Shapiro. Previous, Shain led the UK and EU activities for the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) for 3.5 years. The organization offers cultural export services, strategic consulting, analysis and event production. Sound Diplomacy has offices in London, Berlin and Barcelona. The other partners are Jordi Puy (former head of ICEC / Catalan Arts Export) and Katja Hermes (former project manager for Initiative Musik / German Music Export). Sound Diplomacy is split into three departments: Events, Consulting and Artist Services. It has a team of nine across its three offices. In addition, Shain Shapiro holds a PhD from Birkbeck, University of London.
