Condolence Motion Wade Belak

CONDOLENCE MOTION Moved by: Councillor Mark Grimes Seconded by: Mayor Rob Ford The Mayor and Members of Toronto City Council are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Wade Belak on August 31, 2011. Wade Belak was a Canadian professional hockey forward and defenceman. He was drafted 12th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and the Nashville Predators. Belak was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on July 3, 1976. Belak married Jennifer Jordan Russell in Banff, Alberta. The couple had two daughters; one born in 2004 and one in 2006, both in Toronto. Wade was well liked by both his own team members and other players. It is said that everyone who met Wade immediately liked him. He made friends easily, gathering more every time, wherever he went. "He was a very special guy and was loved by everyone," said retired player Tie Domi. "He was a teammate, a great, great teammate. He was a special kid." Belak made his Toronto Maple Leafs debut on February 17, 2001. Belak played in 63 games with Toronto during the 2001-2002 season. Belak also appeared in 16 playoff games for Toronto. A fan favourite in Toronto, he continued to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs until December 7, 2007. Belak played his last season in the NHL in 2010-2011. After retiring from the game, he was preparing to participate in the CBC show, Battle of the Blades, at the time of his passing. The City Clerk is requested to convey, on behalf of the Members of Toronto City Council, our sincere sympathy to his wife, Jennifer, and the Belak family. September 22, 2011 .
