FFI Constance Bowdler 332078 11 CHURCH NEWS Letter from the Rector Dear friends, Looking back at my letter last month I can see I spoke a little too soon about sun- shine and summer!! Sorry about that. Maybe this month?! British summer, much like the game of golf, is predictable only in its unpredictability!! However, July gives us a marker as the halfway point of the year (can you believe it?), and in the church we settle into a pattern of worship and reflection on God’s creation and all that surrounds us. We hear much about our responsibilities as the human race in terms of the environment, and rightly so, and it is therefore no bad thing that we dwell for a while on what that might mean for you and for me. This is the Green season in the church. If you pop in to any of our churches you should see that the altar is ‘dressed’ in a green frontal to add focus to this notion of God as our creator and the one who gives us ‘dominion’ over all we can see. It is a great privilege and a huge responsibility. During June Julie and I had a week away in Italy. We stayed in a small town in Tuscany which had an interesting history. Where the main town now sits was once a vast area of marshland, and high on a hill which overlooks the modern town sits the original settlement called Montecatini Alto. It is accessible mainly via a funicular rail- way which is always fun! The thing about going up the hill on that railway is that when you reach the top you have the most incredible panorama that spreads before you. Hills, plains, houses and trees all in a vast blanket of colour and diversity, and as it was a particularly clear day when we made the trip, it went on for miles. I am always in wonder when I see a view like that, and it reminds me of how incredible our world really is. In the creation story Adam and Eve are reminded of their responsibilities, and while the story tells us that they quickly renege on their instructions, they are after all only human, nevertheless we still have those words of promise and privilege ringing in our ears when we consider the part we play in our planet. And that too will be reflected in our worship as we work through the summer months. While we go ‘Green’ in general, July is a busy month with much
