(MCO 6200.1E). You’ll just have to stay inside, keep cool, and maybe read the entire edition of the Scuttlebutt Newsletter. It was good to see all of the members who attended last month’s meeting and participated in our discussion on a 2012 USMC Birthday Ball. A special thanks to those folks who volunteered to take on certain tasks for the big event. We also announced that we would be holding a Detachment Tag Sale in the month of September, so please start thinking of any unwanted, yard sale type items, that you would like to donate to the sale. Remember, all donation items are tax deductible. Stay tuned for further details on the event and when donations will be needed. Furthermore, inside this edition you will find updated information on the Camp Lejeune Historic Drinking Water situation. If you ever lived on the main side of Lejeune and/or it’s base housing area’s, between 1957 and 1987, it is recommended that you read the information given on pages 7 & 8, and register to receive updates on research initiatives and study results. PAGE 4 THE SCUTTLEBUTT NEWSLETTER JUL 2012 Detachment Digest - June 2012 GENERAL MEETING MINUTES MARINE CORPS LEAGUE 1058 THURSDAY JUNE 21st, 2012 HELD AT AMERICAN LEGION POST #142 Call to Order – Commandant Scott Vulpis @ 7:30 pm Opening Ceremony Pledge of Allegiance was led by Acting Sgt at Arms Ed Johnson and the Invocation, was read by Chaplain Jim DuVall. Roll Call of Officers: Present; Commandant Scott Vulpis, SVC Kevin Bolender, JA Vito Rao, and Jr. Past Comman- dant Ed Johnson. Guests: Marine Steve Sess, a former 0351 SMAW Gunner that served with 3/5 in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fernando Cardenas, a former Corporal 0311 that served in Afghanistan. Joe Castelano, who served with Motor-T from 1966-1972. Jim the Corpsman who served with 1st Marines from 1966-67. Harry Ward, guest of Marine Gene Bredeck. Minutes of Previous meeting(s): Minutes of the previous meetings on 05/21/2012 and 04/19/2012 were passed around for the members review. A motion to accept the minutes was made by PC Bart Reno, seconded by Marine Tom Depretoro, and carried to a unanimous vote, none opposed. Paymaster Report: Paymaster Harry Delaney reported on the Detachment financial status for all four accounts. A motion was made by PC Ed Johnson to accept the report as stated, seconded by Gene Bredeck, and carried to a unan- imous vote, none opposed. Report of Committees: Membership Committee Chairman Gene Bredeck reminded everyone the that he would award a copy of the Marine Heritage Foundation’s book, “Marines”, to the member that recruited the most new members for 2011-2012. Report of Officers: VSO Vito Rao reported, due to Mexican and South/Central American immigration, the country is now having to deal with a new disease called Chagas, which is a parasitic infection that affects the heart and can kill you. Old Business 1. Birthday Ball and Committee Formation: Cmdt Vulpis reminded everyone that Chairman Coleman would be out of town till the Fall, and we still need volunteers to help out with a list of tasks and responsibilities that are necessary to produce the affair. Venue: Discussed current locations: Gulluppi’s on the Green, the Coral Ridge Yacht Club and the American Legion #142. Tom Depretoro inquired about using the Elk’s Club in Pompano. Cmdt Vulpis explained that we held a previous Ball at that location, resulting in mixed reviews and comments. Guest of Honor: Paymaster Harry Delaney has spoken to the office of the Director of Marine Corps Staff in Wash DC and was told that we have a good chance of getting a General officer to come and attend our event. Ticket Sales: Cmdt Vulpis stated that he and the Paymaster may have to work together on this task. Advertising: Vacant. Program Book: Cmdt Vulpis volunteered to produce the program book. SVC Kevin Bolender recommended that we have members submit Marine Corps stories/ bio’s for this years book. Entertainment: Vacant. 50/50: Tom Depretoro volunteered to coordinate the 50/50 raffle for the evening. Gifts and Prizes: Cmdt Vulpis commented that we should continue to give out the desirable, stainless steel and brass, hand made, USMC License Plates. Tom Depretoro recommended we have a donated wine cart/basket to raffle, as well. Decorations /Centerpieces: Cmdt Vulpis is planning on asking the Auxiliary 1058 to help with this task. 2. Ted Bolender Scholarship: Cmdt Vulpis reported that the Fall Semester application packets will be due on July 14th, 2012 and the upcoming Spring Semester application packets will be available soon.
