The Collation by The Right Reverend James Langstaff Bishop of Rochester and The Induction and Installation by The Venerable Andy Wooding Jones Archdeacon of Rochester of The Reverend Dr Andrew Davey to be Vicar of Christ Church Milton next Gravesend Thursday 20th May 2021 at 7.30pm in the Parish Church INTRODUCTION Welcome to this service in which Andrew Davey is to be made Incumbent of Christ Church, Milton-next-Gravesend. This order of service puts the formal and legal ‘Collation and Induction’ within a setting of worship and prayer. The following notes may help to guide you through the service. • At various points the service refers to the ‘Incumbent’ or the ‘Incumbent-designate’; this simply means the minister who is the vicar or rector – the leading parson. • A ‘benefice’ is the legal entity to which an Incumbent is appointed; very often a benefice will be one parish, but sometimes a benefice will include more than one parish. • A person is ‘Collated’ to a new ministry in a benefice where the Bishop is the ‘Patron’ – i.e. the Bishop on his own has the right to make the appointment; where there is a different Patron, the service is an ‘Institution’. • The Declaration of Assent is made, and the Oaths are taken whenever a minister in the Church of England is commissioned for a new ministry. • The readings at this service are usually chosen by the new Incumbent; they may, therefore, give some suggestion of the new Incumbent’s understanding of calling and ministry. • The renewal of ordination declarations reminds the incumbent- designate of his/her original promises made at ordination, but also (the giving of items symbolic of various elements of ministry) that ministry in any place is shared. • The formal Collation by the Bishop and Induction and Installation by the Archdeacon follow. These elements constitute the legal and traditional form by which a person is commissioned for a new ministry as Incumbent within the Church of England. • The new Incumbent’s first act of public ministry in his new benefice is to lead the people in prayer – this is intended to set a pattern as minister and people share together in prayer. Please take this order of service with you and use it to remind you to continue in your prayers for Andrew, in the ministry to which he is now called and for Alison as they settle into a new home and pattern of life. Introducing the Revd Dr Andrew Davey Andrew was born in Devon and grew up at the seaside. While studying at the University of Southampton he began to explore the call to priestly ministry. Additional studies in South India, Geneva and Westcott House, Cambridge underpinned Andrew’s fascination with ministry in diverse urban communities. After a curacy at the Elephant and Castle (living in an 11th floor flat) Andrew became Vicar of St Luke’s North Peckham. He undertook doctoral studies with the University of Sheffield exploring the application of narrative and liberation theologies in a local church. For 16 years Andrew was the Church of England’s national adviser on community and urban affairs, while continuing to minister, live and cycle in south London. During this time, he assisted at St Paul’s Deptford, Southwark Cathedral and St Catherine’s Hatcham. In 2012 Andrew became Vicar of the Upper Tooting United Benefice, two diverse parishes on the Northern Line. He has been involved in community networks and interfaith work, as well as the church’s engagement with mental health and homelessness. Andrew is married to Alison (a consultant opthmalogist), they have two children, Phoebe and Isaac, and a dog, and a cat. If you have been moved by this service to consider how God might be calling you, please contact your parish priest or go to the vocations page at www.rochester.anglican.org/ministry/vocations/ Some material included in this service is copyright © The Archbishops' Council 2000 GATHERING and PRESENTATION Music is played as the people gather The choir sing an introit: Cantate Domino by Guiseppe Pitoni Hymn (Choir only) All my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew, me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray his trust; what with care and toil he buildeth, tower and temple fall to dust. But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. God's great goodness aye endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought: splendour, light and life attend him, beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from his store newborn worlds rise and adore. Daily doth the almighty Giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; his desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at his hand; joy doth wait on his command. Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ, his Son. Christ doth call one and all: ye who follow shall not fall. The Area Dean welcomes the congregation and those joining online The Bishop greets the people In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit All Amen. Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you: All and also with you. Alleluia Christ is risen All He is risen indeed Alleluia The Bishop introduces the service Area Dean, with the Parish Representatives, the Incumbent-designate stand before the Bishop. The Area Dean and Parish Representatives say, Bishop, we present to you the Reverend Andrew Davey and ask you to institute him as Vicar of this benefice of Christ Church, Milton next Gravesend. Representatives of previous place Bishop, on behalf of all who have shared Andrew’s ministry in Upper Tooting we commend him to you and to the people of this benefice. The Bishop responds and the Area Dean and Representatives are seated. DECLARATION and OATHS The Bishop addresses the Incumbent-designate Andrew you have been chosen to be the new incumbent of this benefice. Do you believe that God is calling you to this ministry? I do so believe. The Archdeacon says Andrew before you are commissioned as Incumbent of this benefice, you must by law make the Declaration of Assent, and take the Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen and the Oath of Canonical Obedience to the Bishop. I now call upon you to make this Declaration and to take these Oaths. The Church of England is part of the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church, worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the Catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care? Incumbent-designate I, Andrew Davey do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the Catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments, I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by canon. Taking a Bible in his/her hand, the Incumbent-designate faces the people and takes the Oath of Allegiance I, Andrew Davey swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors according to law; so help me God. Turning to the Bishop, the Incumbent-designate takes the Oath of Canonical Obedience I, Andrew Davey swear by Almighty God that I will pay true and canonical obedience to the Lord Bishop of Rochester, and his successors, in all things lawful and honest; so help me God. THE COLLECT The Bishop invites the congregation to pray, first in silence. God our Father, Lord of all the world, through your Son you have called us into the fellowship of your universal Church: hear our prayer for your faithful people that in their vocation and ministry each may be an instrument of your love, and give to your servant Andrew now to be collated and inducted the needful gifts of grace; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen THE WORD OF GOD Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 61 The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
