She then attended Howar d Univer s ity to pur s ue a medic al degr ee. Bath graduated with honors from Howard in 1968, and accepted an internship at Harlem Hospital shortly afterward. The following year, she also began pursuing a fellowship in ophthalmology at Columbia University. How others mistreated Patricia Rac is m, and r elative pover ty were the obstac les that s he fac ed as a young gir l gr owing up in Har lem. Ther e were no women phys ic ians , and s ur ger y was a male-dominat ed pr of es s ion; no high s c hools ex is t ed in Har lem, a pr edominant ly blac k c ommunity; additionally, blac ks were ex c luded fr om numer ous medic al s c hools and medic al s oc iet ies ; and, her f amily did not have t he f unds t o s end Pat r ic ia t o medic al s c hool. How I t hi nk about t he wor l d di f f er ent l y bec ause of Patricia I t hink of t he wor l d dif f er ent l y now bec aus e of how Patr ic ia was tr eated. People judged Patr ic ia becaus e of racism. I wouldn’t want anyone to be treated like Patricia was tr eated. Dr . Bath makes me believe that anyone c an do anything, no mat t er what you l ook l ik e. .
