These were published at the same time as the normal trade editions of the book, case-bound in cloth, with the plates printed on ordinary plate paper. Occasionally the publisher issued improved versions of the trade editions with special leather bindings. It was George Harrap who hit on the idea of a “Rackham special”, the most exclusive format of Rackham’s books. From The Vicar of Wakefield on, Harrap held back the first dozen or so copies from the deluxe edition, had them bound in fine morocco (goatskin) by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, decorated in gilt with tools designed by Rackham, and asked Rackham to add a unique original watercolour sketch to the limitation page. This collection includes every title treated by Rackham in this fashion. Rackham had been long-established as a commercial book illustrator before he came to dominate the Edwardian deluxe gift book market. This catalogue is arranged in two sections; the first contains works wholly by Rackham issued in deluxe limited editions; the second contains a wide selection of his commercial work in books, magazines, and periodicals, together with some posthumous catalogues and related ephemera.
